intermittent speedometer

i drove through some water recently and ever since then my speedometer has intermittently stopped working maybe 25% of the time. i figured it was the connector on the speed sensor, however i cleaned it, and a day later, its still on the fritz.

i have a 97 m5od, 2wd i changed the trans. fluid just to be safe.
