I took a trip to D.C. and while I was riding up Pennsylvania Ave. I got pulled over by the secret service for having advanced technology on my Explorer around the White House. I had to sit there for about 30 min with 3 black suburbans behind me and the car surrounded with police while they run background checks on me and my friend. The people walking were pointing and taking pictures of me so it was quite an interesting experience.

    OK - I'll ask:

What all equipment do you have in your Ex?

I assume they saw the antenna(s) and stopped you from visual recognition? Or were they monitoring airwaves for radio transmissions?

You could have had some real fun and started taking pictures of them... :D

Or not- Weird stuff- that would have probably freaked me out a little bit...

Only the US Government would consider a CB antenna "advanced technology" :)

I can see having some sort of radar/satellite looking device on your explorer as being suspicious... but a cb antenna?! They either need to update their definition of "advanced technology" or find something useful to do.

You have a point. I forgot about the range you can get with a vehicle mounted CB...

...or any CB for that matter!

Well here is what happened. I had a 102 inch whip on one corner of the hood, a air cooled coil antenna on the other corner and a little will on the roof. Apparently they thought the whip in the coil antenna was run to "advanced technology". Funny thing is I only had the whip hooked up but they couldn't comprehend that. I only had one stock Uniden pro 78 in my explorer and he asked me what I did with it. lol

I was sitting at a red light when an agent on a bicycle pulled up beside me and asked me what all the antennas were for and I told him my cb. I thought he was just making conversation because I had my windows down. About the time I got the green light and got ready to go he told me to pull over to the side of the road and he called in backup. Before I got to the side of the road my truckwas surrounded by U.S. Capitol Police and Secret Service SUV's. He questioned me for about 5 min about the antennas and a standard gps unit. He said it looked like a heavy duty gps bc it had a big screen. They had an agent on every corner of my truck and some agent was taking pictures of it. After I waited on a background check they told me to take the antennas down so I didn't get stopped again and then let me go.

I can't believe trained agents can't tell the difference in satellite antennas and cb antennas.

Heavy duty GPS = big screen

What exactly is a "heavy duty GPS" anyway?

I feel so much safer after reading about the SS...

Just another case of overpaid under-worked government employees.

Yeah it was the cheapest gps I could buy at the store and we was punching around on the screen like it was some military device. I thought it was kind of funny expect for the fact that I am probably now on some kind on govt. database as a possible terrorists. lol

Haha well I am not really worried. They probably stuck a tracking device on my car.

They were actually trying to be friendly but it was aggravating to me. They apologized for the inconvenience and told me I wasn't in any trouble. One guy asked me if I had a weapon in the car and I said no and then he turned me around and asked me if I had any permits for weapons. I don't know why it would matter if I already told him I didn't have a weapon on me.

Matbe the S.S. agents were so young they didn't know about the 105" whips we all used to run back when nobody had cellular phones, and Citizens Band radio was only way to communicate! FWIW to OP, are your windows tinted????

No tinted windows or any other suspicious things on my truck. I had the windows rolled down and just sitting at a red light. My radio wasn't on or anything. I even had an American car antenna flag flying from the antenna I wasn't using so patriotism makes you look suspicious.
