Haha, yes that's what happened. I don't see why everyone thinks V6 Mustangs are unbeatable. Have any of you actually ran against one yet or just read their numbers?

The engines/drivetrains aren't exactly the same for one thing. They have different intake manifolds and I think cams too. Different engine and transmission programming. Different rear end gear ratios (his 3.31:1 vs my 3.73:1). I'm sure I missed a few things too. Then you have the fact that my truck has a few mods and I was running my 93 octane "torque" program including more aggressive shift programming, etc, and I'm guessing his was stock. Even though my truck weighed more than the Mustang, it still wasn't much of a challenge. And yes he was racing, HE was the instigator.

When my truck was new, I ran against my friend's '90 GT convertible auto which has similar power numbers to the '05 V6 and I beat him all 4 tries. He had a Flowmaster exhaust and CAI and I still beat him with my STOCK truck.

I dont think he meant it in a "mustangs are unbeatable" way. I think he meant it more in a V6 Explorers arent that fast, kind of way is all. The reason some people including myself were skeptical is because that car has allot more potential than your truck does. First off you dont have much in the way for mods. A computer tune, different filter, and single outlet aftermarket exhaust doesnt count for allot in the way of significant power gains. I believe from your modlist that you listed and most likely running bigger tires with a heck of allot higher rotating mass which slows the vehicle down a huge amount because not only does the engine got to fight to pull that extra weight down the road, but it also has to fight to turn it too. The engine is extremely similar to the 4.0 explorer SOHC engine. The difference between the two engines would be about at big as the difference between a mustang 4.6 engine and an explorer 4.6 engine which is pretty much nill. That guys also has uite a big advantage in the way of stock vehicle weight too. Not to mention the extra weight of your stereo equipment and lift equipment. Then you have the transmission. That 5 speed auto if it was, will whoop up on a 4 speed auto anyday. The new 5 speed autos were touted as finally giving the 5 speed manual guys something to worry about. Not only do they have one more gear to be able to use but they also seem to be losing lees power through them than other generations of transmissions too. Being that the V6 powerband isnt a very huge one this tranny also helps keep the engine in its sweet spot within that band so as to be able to accellerate as quick as possible. To simplify it auto to auto the 5 speed wins hands down. If it were a manual then though it can be quick also, he could have missed a shift or something which is totally plausible on the street. Like I said, I have won against people on the street that I normally shouldnt have due to certain circumstances and it seems like you encountered the same thing too. No the new V6 mustang is not fast. Actually they are turds in my eyes, but those turds still are faster than any stock/near stock V6 explorer (sport or not). On the street sometimes things happen that shouldnt happen. I say enjoy this kill because you probably wont see many like it. The same goes in my situation above with the WS6 too. Good Kill

I raced some guy in a toyota ricer last night. I knew he had a big budget and a high powere ngine, cuz he was sportin the primered body kit :p

Stupid kill, but it was fun cuz he had an empty car, and my 4.0L auto was loaded down with 4 adults and a bunch of gear in the back.

I'm glad you like the 5r55 trans. Its what comes in the '01+ Sports.
This generation of Explorer Sport only came with the 4.0L SOHC and your choice of the 5spd manual or 5spd auto. You obviously know alot about them, LOL. With the shift improvements from the Xcal2, it shifts alot quicker and firmer than stock too.

Tires/gear ratio:
He has 27" tires and 3.31:1 final drive ratio. When I bought my tires, they were 30" (I got the stock size before I decided to mess with the suspension). They are now down to about half their tread life, but for now we'll say they're 30" anyway and 3.73:1 gears. The ratio advantage still goes to me. Here's a gear ratio/MPH calculator if you want to play with the numbers yourself.
I couldn't find anything online to calculate rotating mass vs accelleration in my quick search, but my tires are each 10-12 lbs heavier, so I'm guessing it'll just about even out my gear ratio advantage. Not the huge disadvantage you seem to think it is.

later,
Mike

I didnt say I liked the 5R55 trans. I was saying that as a 5 speed it will have an advantage over a 4 speed because it keeps the engine in its powerband better. So I forgot that your vehicle has a 5 speed instead of the 4 speed auto, big deal. Also what lead you to believe that I thought the engine in your vehicle was any different than the 4.0 SOHC??? I may have been mistaken on what tranny your truck has but that is about the only thing. I also DO KNOW one hell of allot about racing vehicles and what combos it takes to go fast whether we are talking stock or modded. Another thing you seem to forgot to address in your debate with me is that the car also has a weight advantage too, like I stated in my previous statement. Not only are we talking sotkc weight advantage but also most likely weight advantage due to your stereo equipment too! Another thing is with the rims and tires. Your rims and tires are a heck of allot bigger and weigh a hell of allot more than his do. Adding rotating mass and adding regular weight to the vehicle are two different things. When dealing with rims and tires being that your engine not only has to haul it but also has to spin it, it acts like a double whammy. This is all stuff that I already know. I dont have to do internet searches for this information to put it out. You seem to make a point and try to back it up by trying to put together facts after you already dove in. I have a FULL understanding of these concepts beforehand because I know and live this stuff. Also your lift I believe you said you had will lead to slower weight transfer too. Now this is a fineline area because you dont want to transfer weight too quickly and dump it over the axle and spin your tires but at the same time you want to transfer it quickly enough to get off the line in a decent amount of time. Bottom line is that it seems you just attempted to get into a little bit of a pissing contest with the " and all that" when it comes to figuring out what certain vehicles are slower and faster and why. My reply to that is, "Go back to the internet and study a little more before coming to me like you actually know what your talking about." I dont doubt you won that race. I never said that I didnt believe that you won, but it will not be a regular occurance.

oh yea i forgot one more a certian black with silver striped 98 sport too muhahaha

hold on a sec, i am not trying to sound like a dick or anything, but i just want to clear something up, 1. the crown vic is not a v10 it is a 4.6l v-8, 2. the only way that dodge was a v-10 was 1 of 2 ways, it was either pre 3rd gen body style or it was the srt-10 which i kinda would have a hard time believing unless u had a good amt of motor work, i have raced a sohc 2 dr explorer with exhaust and intake and i beat it and i have a hemi ram, once again i do not mean to put anyone down or act like an a hole

I am thinking that truck does not even have a SOHC. The motors that came in the 93 are not powerful enough to beat 96+ V6 SOHC. So I am thinking hes got a SB stroker in that X pumping out some serious ponies.

Kept up with a Turbo'd Lancer on the interstate Saturday from about 75 to 110. Side by side then I got off the gas, 110+ in a rolling box is a little too much for me on the interstate. Messed with a new Jeep Cherokee with the 6.1 Hemi, pretty damn quick, but I pulled when I hit second. Still wanna go at it with a Vette just to see what's in stored for me..........
