My shifter has gone wacko!!

I have a 1992, with automatic trans. I pulled in the drive got out to pick up mail in mail box. Pulled shifter from park to drive and nothing happen? Then when I pulled it all the way down to 1 it goes forward. OK so I pulled up the drive and parked in front of the house. It will go in park and hold, when I pull it down to drive it goes into reverse and when I go to 1 it will go forward.
Did the shifting linkage come loose?? or did the tranny blow up.

Well your column shifter moves a cable and the cable moves the shift arm on the tranny, so it sounds to me like you cable is either loose at the shifter or at the tranny. I would get under the truck and look.

Remember!!! if you are under the truck playing with the shift linkage the last thing you want to do is accidently take it out of park, so the Ebrake and a wheel chuck is your best friend here....

Ocassionally the cable can stretch and the linkage needs to be adjusted. Get under there and look, I bet you find it's a simple fix.
