Well, in my quest for a winter beater for a grand or less i've come across many a boring honda and toyota 4 cylinder truck with no body etc.

so i was flipping through auto trader yesterday and lo and behold there is a 1979 futura for exactly $1,000 usd. Not only that but it looks to be perfect body wise etc. From what i could see in the picture it had 16" american racing rims on it, no body damage or visible rust, recent black custom paint with the color shifting flames etc. etc. Sadly- its a 6-cylinder though.

so anyways i call the number as soon as class is out and i get a nice older sounding lady on the phone- she doesn't know anything about the car being as she inherited it recently, says that her grandson or some such restored it and was showing it but that its hers now (didn't ask why- but i'm assuming death) says it has a custom interior too, but that i'll have to go out there and check it out since she really doesn't know anything about the car.

i'm going out there in about 3 hours, thought i'd let ya'll know an dthought you might have some advice for me.

Awesome! Those cars are easy to fix, and modify. Their parts are relatively inexpensive.

Anyways, my friend's Futura appears in Billy Bob Thorton's new movie "Friday Night Lights" which was [partly] filmed here in Houston.

Straight six. Probably will run forever.

I still see these things around Sacramento because rust is never an issue here. Probably the worst thing about it would be the late 70's emission controls - pre Electronic Engine Control. That and the ugly ass styling ;)

here are a few pictures of it.

it ran and drove well in person as well. I may offer somewhere between 500 and 800. I'm mainly concerned about how reliable it would be in the winter as compared to a cheap ass honda.

    the interior is beautiful

If it is as good as it looks in the pictures, I'd jump all over it. The chassis is essentially the same as the Fox-bodied Mustangs of the same era, so it would be real easy to swap in a 5.0 and make it into the ultimate sleeper. Great find!

Pardon my ignorance, ..., but, why must you have a car for the winter? And, how long is the winter in Minnesota?
