check the connections between the head unit and the speakers. Also make sure the head unit you bought has an internal amplifier, higher end head units don't so that means you need an external amp. If the headunit says anything like 40x4 then it has an internal amp.

Connect the remote wire for your factory amp to the remote wire on the HU or buy an amp bypass kit.

The remote wire for the AMP. The factory amp needs a bypass kit or needs to have the remote wire connected in order to get sound.

im having this same problem. so if i run a remote wire from the factory amp to the cd player then that will bypass the amp? or will my sound just be coming from the factory amp? how will this make it work?

That will tell the factory amp to turn on hence the speakers work. They come from the factory connected to that amp. That amp has to be on for the speakers to have power. You can buy a harness to bypass the amp so you can use your HU's internal amp, which will give crisper and cleaner sound.

I'm not a big search button proponent like some people but some topics (for instance: "why my speakers won't work with my new HU") are getting a little redundant and I've only been on this site for half a year. Can't we make a sticky for this or a "usefual thread" or something? I would just say "search!" but it never seems to be that easy.
