Oxygen Sensor wiring harness mixup

I'm trying to verify that I'm plugging the correct sensors into their respective plugs in the harness. I removed the old sensors, was distracted, and got back to working on replacing the new ones 3 hours later....couldn't remember which plug the left/right one goes in.

I looked up the wiring diagram at autozone, but it refers to the sensors as 1-4, not front left, or bank1-1, or whatever. I'm not sure which is 1, which is 2....you get the idea.

The harness for the rear sensors has a lead which is longer than the other, is that the left or right one?

This is on a 1998 Explorer 4.0 SOHC, w/ auto trans and 2WD.

O2 sensor wiring

According to my 2000 wiring diagram which should be similar to your 1998 the unique wires for the sensors are:

HO2S #11 (right front): RD/WH & GY/LB

HO2S #12 (right rear): WH/BK & RD/LG

HO2S #21 (left front): RD/BK & YE/LB

HO2S #22 (left rear): VT/LG & TN/YE

RD: red
WH: white
GY: gray
LB: light blue
BK: black
LG: light green
YE: yellow
VT: purple
TN: tan

2000StreetRod, do you have this same info for a '96 5.0? I transplanted an engine into a buggy, and the junk yard engine just had all the sensor wires bundled together, so I dont know which sensor is which.

1996 O2 sensor wiring

The following is from my 1996 wiring diagram for the 5.0L. Unfortunately, it doesn't explain the location of the sensors. It only identifies their numbers. But the wire colors are the same as on the 2000.

HOS1/HO2S #11 (right front):
Gray/Lt blu - O2 sense
Org - sensor return
Rd/Wht - heater
Lt blu/Org - heater return

HOS2/HO2S #21 (left front):
Rd/Blk - O2 sense
Org - sensor return
Yel/Lt blu - heater
Lt blu/Org - heater return

HOS3/HO2S #12 (right rear):
Rd/Lt grn - O2 sense
Org - sensor return
Wht/Blk - heater
Lt blu/Org - heater return

HOS4/HO2S #22 (left rear):
Ppl/Lt grn - O2 sense
Org - sensor return
Tan/Yel - heater
Lt blu/Org - heater return

All of the sensor returns are connected together
All of the heater returns are connected together
