This thread discusses the stereo wiring diagram for 98-02 Explorers:

This thread shows a member installing a double-din unit in a 2005 Explorer:

This thread is small, but briefly mentions hooking up the audio steering wheel controls for a 3rd Gen:

If you go to the Explorer Audio & Navigation forum, you'll probably find what you're looking for....or even make a post in there. I found those 3 posts above on the first page...it's a pretty common request:

I purchased and installed a similar Pioneer 3600 DD DVD in my 2004 Explorer about 6 months ago, works and looks great. I used the standard aftermarket wire harness, mount kit and brake bypass. Don't remember all the details but it was an easy install. Matched the wire harness wires with the aftermarket harness before installing in dash, hooked up the bypass as directed and all worked great. Maybe the extra wires are for the 6 disc changer which probably won't hook up.

And which aftermarket harness did you use on that '04? stumped here.

Thanky!

Yep, that's the puppy! The connector Scosche recommends ain't that. I wound up buying an FDK106 at Wally & cutting off all the xtra connectors. I can't complain (much) as the wrong one was a freebie from Sonic Electronix. I'd actually bought a relatively inexpensive Jensen mechless from them for my Mystique and as I had a rather nicer JVC with CD still in the box that I wanted to install in the wife's Explorer (stock CD crapped out), since Sonic was giving out a free harness and kit (as needed) with the Jensen, I put down the Explorer as the car it was going in, to get the DIN install kit, and simply bought the harness for the Mystique as an add on, saved 12 bucks that way. So other than taking the trouble to point out to Scosche and Sonic that they need to rethink what they ship for an '04 Ex, I'm not chopping trees about it, except the extra day it took me to figure out a fitment.

(edit: saved 12 bucks, then respent it at Wally for that other connector plus tax. Karma is a cold, heartless b*tch)

(edit again: I see ebay has the harness alone for five bucks, free shipping. Meh. Well I already had the stock out and she wasn't going to drive it with the bezel thingy hanging down by the a/c wires & vacuum hoses...)
