"Rattling" sound from auto trans when idling in gear

I think too that the noise is coming from the torque converter.
Try to make a video with your mobile phone, you can hear the noise better than when driving.

I found another video on youtube with a nearly noise: http://youtu.be/agIvQbcIqgw
In this case the problem was the torque converter.

I'll get the car on a lift Thursday, so I can listen it better.

I'll let you know!

Yesterday the explorer was the lift. I was able to eliminate the hypothesis of catalytic converter.

Noise is comming from the section between the gearbox and the engine block. But sill really hard to say if it is the torque converter or somthing else.

I'll check the transmisson fluid and filter if there are metal parts as soon as I get the parts and fluid.

I must change the engine oil, I will do a check in the engine oil pan too.

Wait and see ...

I think I have the TQ rattle too... at the beginning at idle was nothing to hear, only when I was lightly accelerating and before the torque converter locks up.

Now it makes a lot more noise. I made a video: http://youtu.be/IVn__ODyoMc

Does this sound like the TQ or could be the catalytic converter?

This (video) does not sound like mine. Leaving from standstill, I have the "rattling" sound just like everyone else, until the converter locks. Now, in the the last couple of months, it has started some kind of a rattle coming to a stop (30 mph-stop) and then the rattle stops

In my case it was the torque converter. The inside springs were broken.
Since the torque converter has been changed the noise disappeared.

Exactly what springs are we talking about? Something internal?

Yes, the torque converter springs on the inside have collapsed. Only way to fix it is to replace the torque converter or to bring it to a automatic transmission specialist to check every springs (clutch, overdrive, press regulator, regulator valve.....) but it will be too expensive.

What does a converter cost for one of these trucks?

I've payed about 250$ for the rebuild torque converter (without shipping cost).

I just started hearing this noise this morning. I get it in park and everywhere else. I can't tell if it goes away at lockup due to engine and road noise. I have seen a lot of people ignoring it; what is the downside to doing so, other than the noise itself?

My 03 had the same noise last summer. It would also overflow fluid when on the interstate for more than 20 minutes. It ends up all over the rear hatch.

Took it to a local tranny shop, had the Torque Converter replaced along with servo bore sleeves and some other bits. The guy at the shop said the noise and fluid overflow was due to bad TQ.

It was good for about a month. It then started to get a slight chatter again. Took it back to the shop, guy said it was normal (BS).

It's been about 9 months and it has gotten progressively louder. Took it on the interstate last week and it started spitting tranny fluid. I plan on taking it back to the shop this week and having words with the owner.

Aside from the noise it functions fine. But the noise drives me completely mental.

Video of the noise before the TQ being replaced.

I had that same noise driving me crazy for a couple of months and was told it was the torque converter too. Well, I finally got under the truck myself and found it was a heat sheild on the side of the tranny that had popped loose making all that racket. I had to bend the clip a little bit and just popped it back into place. It did take me about half an hour, but it was free and cured the rattle. I was about to take it in and have the torque converter replaced! Glad I took the time to get under it to check it out. Also, I did have a couple of welds pop on the exhaust pipe heat sheild too, so make sure to check thos out too. Good luck!

I have the same sound on the 03 Mounty I picked up yesterday. Good thing im getting a service contract through AAA for it. Figure I'll wait a few months, then take it to the dealer and have them deal with the diesel noise, replace the slightly leaky pass side valve cover, and do the 12yr old open recall that no one ever bothered to take care of.
