Wiper motors usually have an internal switch that tells the motor when it is in the parked position.

Now, usually, you can turn off a wiper and it keeps running until it is parked, bacause this interal switch keeps power going to the motor until it is parked.

So, what if this internal switch gets flaky and starts telling the motor it isn't parked? It starts running until it does get a parked signal.

You could take off the wiper arm until you get around to fixing it... at least then you won't look like an idiot from a distance. ;)

It might be a problem at the rear wiper switch too.

I don't know how far you can disassemble and repair this motor. If you end up going there, do yourself a favor and use the access to grease up the rear door latch mechanisms. They are tough to get to if they break while the door is shut.

at first i thought you meant parked as in my tranny lol

so the issue is the motor is screwing up, or possibly the switch?
for now ill just take the arm off, dont want to bother with fixing it right now, to many other things to take care of.

how would i take the arm off? ive never changed more then the blades before. just turn the nut on the outside and it pulls right off? unplug a wireharness? and done?

You will see a little catch coming out of the base of the wiper arm. Pull it out and the wiper arm should come off. The rear wiper may be on a separate fuse, that would be the easiest fix, if that is the case.

I think it's either the main switch itself, or like roadrunner said, there's a switch in the motor that isn't turning it off.

Mine just goes over to the left when turned on, then stays there, and won't go back to the parked position unless I do it by hand. Guess the rear wipers get screwy over time or some part of the electronics goes.

Mine did that for a while until a couple years later stopped all together. I had to replace it recently and was driving around with a hole in my lift gate for about a week. The cheapest place I found one was at autopartswharehouse.

You just replaced the motor and it fixed it?

I'm still suspicious it might just be the switch or something I can fix without replacing the entire motor. The motor has seen little use since the vehicle was new, so unless it's just gone bad, I'm still hoping it could be something smaller, and cheaper to fix.

Mine will go half wipe, then rest at the left side of the window and when it's good and ready it will go back to the right (park) position. Then it may go back and forth for a few sweeps, or not. I just don't bother using it any more, I drive forward most of the time anyway ;).

i took the old wiper motor out and saw that the connections from the relay to the motor coil were bad. I imagine if you haven't replaced yours, that 20 years could do the same thing to yours. My front driver and passenger window motors just went bad last year too. It's just a matter of time before 20 year old rubber and copper corrodes and disintegrates.

it would be nice if it was just a fuse or bad connection somewhere to the switch though.

Did you check the harness in the rear lift gate door panel?
