I'm a big fan of Rustoleum spray paints, as I have painted my Chevy truck twice with it. The last time I painted it, I used a gloss paint, and it isn't so overbearing that its ugly.
I thought that was plastic for years. When I had my rig repainted by the dealer, I learned that it’s actually just black automotive paint on sheet metal.
I now wax it with the rest of the vehicle. I didn’t for the first 15 years and think that probably contributed to the faster fading.
