I just got my Mountaineer 2002 and for the trailer hitch it's a small receptacle can I find a SMAll hitching post that will carry a regular ball hitch with this?

2002 Explorers came with a class II hitch std, that is the 1 1/4" version. A class III hitch package could have been ordered, this gave you a 2" class III hitch receiver and some engine cooling equipment, depending on year and engine/trans combo.
Your towed weight is still limited by the rating of the Class II hitch and the weight rating of the vehicle itself. You could upgrade the whole assembly to a Class III hitch.

Yes, you can get an adaptor. But why not just buy a 1¼" ballmount, with the right size ball, and be done with it? You can get them at Walmart, probably be cheaper than the adaptor.
