2002 Explorers came with a class II hitch std, that is the 1 1/4" version. A class III hitch package could have been ordered, this gave you a 2" class III hitch receiver and some engine cooling equipment, depending on year and engine/trans combo.

This adapter is available:
https://www.amazon.com/MaxxHaul-70032-inches-Hitch-Adaptor/dp/B008CE09N4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1533831049&sr=8-5&keywords=1+1/4"+hitch+2"+ball

Your towed weight is still limited by the rating of the Class II hitch and the weight rating of the vehicle itself. You could upgrade the whole assembly to a Class III hitch.

Yes, you can get an adaptor. But why not just buy a 1¼" ballmount, with the right size ball, and be done with it? You can get them at Walmart, probably be cheaper than the adaptor.
