First, the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) looks to be steadily moving forward, its last meeting with government officials being extremely positive, with a hoped-for opening in early 2013. It should consist of 6,000 acres, and be reasonably priced for daily and yearly permits. The land now is "free" but wholly unsanctioned by the community and law enforcement for what it's worth.

Second, Reading Anthracite finally entered the 19th century and allowed mailed-in permit requests, instead of having to visit the office in Pottsville M-F during normal business hours. (I hated that--it's not easy to do things during normal business hours when you're working normal business hours.) However, RAC jacked the price by $25 this year and does not offer partial-year permits.
