I'd keep calm, and attempt to kick out the rear hatch window since it opens out and up. This is assuming I wouldn't take the largest wrench from my toolbox and take out a window...

I documented the last time that Aldive has driven into water. You can see pics of it here http://poetry.rotten.com/suzuki/

Now i thought that pot holes in my neighborhood were bad but that is just plain rediculous. I will never complain about potholes again unless one swallows up my ex. :D

Hey! I would rather read these threads than newbie thread after thread of " Will 31X10.5 tires fit my Ex ?", or "Where do I buy this, that, yada, yada?"

If you don't like the theoretical threads, don't post to them guys. I never hear anything worse said to those other thread authors other than "Do a search:rolleyes:........

For training purposes; no not my own truck.

I can tell you the first time was one of the scarest things I have ever experienced. And I had SCUBA and escape tools inside.

I can truely understand how people die in these cases ; panic can overcome any reasonable thought process.

We have found that the electric windows short our rather quick when submerged ( at least in salt water, which is where all the tests were done ).

As previously stated, it is impossible to open the doors until all the air inside is gone, At this point in other than controled situations, I am sure panic would prevail.

    Kicking out windows proved impossible.

The best escape tool is a spring loaded venter punch;just put it against a window and release the trigger, crack, the window is instantly shattered aND can be pushed out.

Cars in the water are a fact of life in Florida and unfortunately most of the occupants die ( panic ).

Keep cool, let it fill up, then open the door and swim out' or use a center punch. I keep a pinch in the gloce box of every one of my vehicles.

If you don't have a punch tool or something solid and metallic in the truck, use the seatbelt buckle to break the window. The straps are long enough for you to reach the side glass with some force.

I always have a mag light tucked between my driver's seat and the console. That is quite sufficient to break the window.

Jeff, we tried various things such as you suggest to brake the glass. Unfortunately, the density of the water prevents enough force to cause brakage.

    Its truly a bad situation.....

I don't think the questions we posted when we were newbies were a lot more inteligent  I think all newbies have the right to be newbies for a while :D

But back to the question: I would turn off my engine. I would not want my motor to get hydrolocked ;)

I would wait for the water to fill up, open the door, swim to the back, open the gate, get out my tow straps, hook those up, swim back to the front to get my keys, mountain dew, and cd's, then swim to the top(with tow strap, keys, and mt. dew in hand). Then pull the truck out of the water, and start it up, chase down/run over person who caused this.
    (too much coffee I think)

    No, I didn't.

This is one of the training exercises that we have the EMS guys perform.

Its easy to sit at the computer and type about how you would do this and that, but it is a whole new ball game when its you in that car,

    Been there and done that,

I would do like Walker Texas Ranger (before the citcom). Though he was burried in his RamCharger...

Crack a few brews and chug them as fast as I could. Grab all that is important, wait.....chug, buuuurrrppp, chug more. Think about how much I like water. Turn on lights to see if there is anything cool to look at while sinking and chugging. Chug more, pour beer on head and shake head voilently, scream WOOOOOHOOOOOOOFUC#INAAAAAAAAAAAA. Then I would grab all undrank beer and smash out window with either ruined palm piot or flashlight. Swim out with beer and keys and sit and drink till I passed out. LOL

I actually bought one of those window breakers. It has a light so you can see, a recessed razor to cut the seat belt and the hammer pointy thing to break the glass.
