supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

hi everyone, my name is tim . i live in selkirk, manitoba, canada and as if this date that i am posting this, i am 36 years old.

i bought my sport in jan 05 from a local ford dealer. it had 111,000KM's on it. this is the second sport i have owned. it was sitting on the lot for about 8 months before i came along. i am the third owner (i was able to track down the person that traded it in, and they got it from a friend, who bought it new in 98).

i started to do a few things to it after i first got it, then i found this site, and all hell broke lose! i've never been satisfied with something the everyone else has, so i started to tinker with it even more.

plus you know you have done something right when.....

your truck (as well as corkey) wins truck of the month

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=296023

is the feature truck on the fun hump day radio show (starts roughly around the 30 min mark)

http://explorerforum.podbean.com/2011/03/23/19-vroom-zoomboom/

and you drive 26 hours ONE WAY to the carlisle all ford nationals in june 2010 and 2011, and grab second place in the s.u.v. all category!

scan00012.jpg

then in 2014 you go back to the same show you have been to 5 years in a row (nothing by most, but its one hell of a long drive) and take first!

I guess I just kinda figured you took it how I do every time. I just go numb.

Good stuff here, I love the tuning details, and the April Fool's joke got me too.

I have a BA2600 also that I was going to use with the boost, but it'll go on my NA 347. The BA3000 is what I was aiming at for the boosted engine, and they are reasonable.

The A/F tuning is the big key to saving or killing a stock 302 block, and the air inlet temps are big too. If you can get an IC working and bring the IAT's down a lot, the block can survive better. Head studs help, the main caps being so thin are the weakest link. Any movement and the stock block bottom end doesn't last long.

so i will begin this post by saying this. this if i am not wrong is only the second time on my thread that i have given a big 'ol thank you to a company for their customer support. i ordered my new maf from pmas http://www.pmas-maf.com/ on the first. they told me over the phone it would take 3 days and i would have it. yea, right i thought. up in canada. nothing gets here that fast except a bill for tax, duty, and what have you. well, almost 2 weeks went by and i didnt see it. i called and asked were it was. after a hour or two they had called me back to say fed ex cant find it....great.....BUT was told we have another one that we are going to box up, and send out right now, and you should see it monday, no later then tuesday. once again i thought yea, right. ill be sitting, waiting for another 2 weeks (this was on a friday btw). monday comes and i get a call from fed ex telling me there is a package here that i need to pick up!!!!! don works near their depot, so he was able to grab it for me. i was doing the happy dance. so with that said, i would very much recommend ordering from them. and a big thanks to their rep. beth allen! she went way above the bar to help me out.
with that said, i finally had a chance to wire it in tonight (the pig tail is different then the ford one, or at least on our explorers). had to ask a buddy of mine to get me a wire diagram just to make sure i was doing this thing right. 20 mins later it was in.

for anyone that may ever need to know what wires to what on the maf. just remember, this is for a 98 5L.

next came tuning. to my surprise it started up fine. ran a little rich, did a few goofy things when it went into closed loop, but it was to be expected. did a few logs, don has already started to do the retune as well.
the next few weeks to a month are going to be hell for me. we have dons truck up and running again (YAY!) so i dont want to bug him too much because i know he will want to do some tuning to his truck. i am now also repaying every favour to my buddy that has let me use his lift every i have done the motor swaps in evil, or anything else by doing a complete body and paint to his (cough) chevy truck. and i am also still plaining to get to all ford nations by the end of may/beginning of june, so i am going through the motions. even if i dont get there, at least i will have a bunch of work done, and wont need to do it later.

Excellent, good to hear things are going forward. I like that MAF for its looks, black and solid looking. I had Jon powder coat my SCT thing black, and it has a flange on one end(good I think).

Maf

I wonder where the first one ended up? lol
Glad progress is being made!

Let us know how high in the Maf transfer function the airflow hits after you get a WOT datalog.

I wonder where the first one ended up? lol

funny you mention that, after going for a datalog, i took my little dog for a walk to the mail box, open it up, and there is a notice to go to the post office. i head there, she scans the notice and says "ok, there is a $24 duty on this".....first thing i think of is oh no! is that the first maf? low an behold she hands me the box, and there is the first maf and pigtail. it some how got sent snail mail.

Here's the maf correction required to date.
Step testing is done, and this is a 2nd gear part throttle pull.
This was up to about 5500rpm. Tim said he encountered some detonation, so we will adjust timing 2 degrees everywhere except for very low loads.
I decided its safest to do a part throttle (Some of the pull was just over .5 load) for safety and to make sure I can fill in some of the maf add counts cells that get missed in the wot pull with the m112 hitting high maf add counts and loads so quickly.

We will apply these changes, and on to the fun stuff.
Next up...WOT pull! Yea Baby!!!

maf counts

I want to know how many spaces lower the max maf counts will be hitting with this new maf, keep me posted.

Maf add counts hit 803 at 6100 rpm.

I'm guessing about 250 lower.
I'd have to pull an old log and make sure wot rpm's were the same and check maf add counts.

Maybe tomorrow, I need to get out to the garage and torque my lower intake.

that and i did one final log before heading to a budys to start on his truck and emailed it to don. he called me on the phone and his words were
don "your a very bad bad man"
me "(?) huh? why, what did i do?" (thinking i might have screwed something up when we put his truck together)
don "you forgot to plug in your wideband..."
me :splat::banghead:

so it looks like i do another one. but it is feeling better and better the more he tinkers with it. we have had to pull some timing out. i can hear some pinging here and there.
took a few guys i work with for a haul today as well. lets just say the laughter was hysterical, and the word "holly ****" were thrown around a lot. especially when the tires broke loose while in second gear.

Broke em loose in 2nd with a full load of people? Holy crap! Thats wicked! Woot!!

i am keeping in mind that
a. its still cool right now
and b. the streets are still a little dusty. there still is some loose sand from winter. we will see what it does when its something like july out. but at the same time, yea i would say she was hauling something like 500lbs (not including me) of dead weight

Tell the part of you that wants to be cheap to shut up. lol, hahahaha

There is a used BA3000 for 180 plus shipping on eBay.
I have not looked into the mafs so I am not sure what one you will need but the wording on the cheap one you listed made it sound like it was a direct replacement for the lightning maf, not an upgrade. You need one that can measure more than the lightning maf, since you are close to pegging it by reaching the second to the top box in the maf transfer function.
Don told me you hit 941 counts at 5,500 rpm. You will peg if you go any higher.

If he was at 941 counts before at 5,500 and now is at 803 at 6100, I would say that looks like an improvement.
I would love to see a wot datalog (with Air Fuel) when you get one.

well, we turned on the meth kit for the first time since we started tuning, and things went out of wack on the bottom side of things so don has informed me. we are not sure if something went screwy in the tune, or truck. i really hope the tune, because finding what the problem is in the truck is going to piss me off. i started the body on a friends truck tonight (my budy joe who has the lift at his house, have to pay him back somehow) and i have to crank it out as fast, and proper as i can. so this might be a monster of a challenge.
however, i did find something out tonight as well. a old buddy of mine rolled up along side of me at a stop light with his 2016 f150 5L. i jokingly said lets go for pinks. well, when the light turned green, he pulled on me (the front of my bumper was at the front of his box) because it spun madly. however, when it hooked i literally flew by him like he hit the brakes. i even had to ask him if he was still on it, and he said yes with his jaw hitting the ground lol.
tomorrow i am going to load the second last tune don did for me, make a idle log and get him to look at it and see if it was the same as the one i sent before.

so tonight i had the energy of a sloth. 4point had made a few suggestions on what to find. lucky however that him and don narrowed it down to bank one giving me problems. figured now is a good time to change the plugs as well. when i went to pull #3 cylinder, the wire at the boot almost crumbled in my hand, and broke off when i pulled it. found the problem.
changed all the plugs, checked the wires for resistance, and did a idle log for don to look at. much better. will do a wot with the meth kit on tomorrow and see how badly that will mess with things lol

wire

Glad you found it.
What do you think is ruining the wires, is it the heat from the headers?

Glad you found it.

Yup it's no doubt in my mind . It is a common problem with guys that are running torque monster headers

double boot them!

Yeah, the stock fiberglass covers are great to save and reuse if you can. The wires see a bunch of high heat at the manifolds, it's a torture test for plug wires.
