Help, my 91 Explorer has just started to rev up and then fall off without anyone touching the accelerator. When you put the car in gear, the engine stalls unless you push the accelerator as you drop into D (not a good idea, I know but I had to move it off the road).

This just came out of the blue yesterday afternoon. Any ideas on the cause of this problem, whether it's capable of being repaired by me (I can do most of the basics, but am not mechanically inclined/capable), and likely costs to repair if I have to go to a mechanic?

      Thanks in advance.

Sounds like its hunting. Look for something stuck open like the IAC valve or disconected air intake.
      Just my two pence worth.
