tranfers case / shift motor thread

I know there is a thread on this.... but it doesn't cover my question..
96 xlt controltrac 5 speed
Turn the dail to any 4wheel setting, lights come on. You can hear it clunks in.
Start to move the truck, lights go out, 4wheel disengages..

shift motor ? tranfercase? front differential ?

I was quoted 1500 -2000 $ for a transfer case from Beasly ford in York PA.
they said till I bring it in there not sure, but it sounds like thats the problem...

Check the vacuum connection to the front differential. If anything, you may need to clean/replace the shift motor on the t/f case (couple hundred bucks to replace max). Unless the input/output shaft or the clutch in the t/f case are shot, there should be no need to replace the whole transfer case.

thanks,, it was bad shiftmotor.. 173$ bandnew from local 4x4 shop.
Now i got to deal with everything else going wrong with the truck
