Hey quick question. What is this black piece? Its leaking tranny fluid. It connects from a line from the transmission to the rad. Im assuming its for the transmission cooler.

probably a filter or something
the cooler is like the radiator (if external one is there) and infront of the radiator.

the line go into the radiator which I guess would cool the fluid to engine temps (or warm up to), then to an external cooler in front of the radiator if equipped, and return back to transmission.

On '01 sport trac I added a remote spin on filter kit in series to the line (so the filter would be replaced ever so often - bought 2 engine oil filters instead of one), this gets the super fine particles out of the oil.

This is an aftermarket add on external filter.

Ditto, an inline filter. Many shops install filters as part of a trans rebuild, often required for a warranty. A transmission which is driven too long after symptoms begin, spread debris throughout the system, including the radiator and other cooler. The filter helps to protect the whole system by catching material that is left in parts that the shop doesn't replace.
