I've got an 01 XLT with 146 k that is overdue for a transmission flush & fill. Looks like the last one was done at 100k. After reading extensively about the various ailments that tend to afflict these, I wanted to ask for advice.

Since it's overdue, should I change the filter & 3 or 4 quarts, then drive it for a while to see what comes loose, and then do the flush & filter change described elsewhere in the forum? Should I just flush & change ASAP? Am I already in deep fecal matter having gone 45k without a flush?

I was reading about how easily the ECM gets gunked up (I think it applies to my flavor of explorer, but I do lose track) which concerned me about a bunch of crap starting to come loose in the transmission.

I'm not having any issues with the transmission at the present (knock on wood). Believe my parents (original owners to 108k) had usual & customary services performed.
