I have a 98 explorer xlt with a 4.0ohv and and automatic, im going to need a tranny and was wondering if the transmission out of a 5.0 would bolt up and work in this. I read these trannys have a little lower ratio and it might help out more because im running 38s. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry I can't help with your specific question, but, lower ratio =/= lower gear.
If you've got big tyres you need high ratio/low gears.

No it is not compatible.

what he said, the bell housing bolt pattern is different and the lingth plus one is a 4 speed the other a 5. But I can tell you that the high psi vain in the valve body is extreamly long and tends to flex as there's no reinforcement to it and eventually turns into a cross leak. About 80% of the ones I've worked on this was the case and an easy fix if done correctly.
