Transmission Shift Display Off One Gear - 1999 4wd V6 Auto xlt

1999 4wd V6 Auto Trans xlt. The shift window on the dash is off about 3/4 to the right. When the console displays R (reverse) the car is in park. Neutral is actually in Drive, 2nd is in 1st. Can not shift into 1st gear. Looked under dash at shifter cable and it looks fine. Looked under car where the cable goes through a bracket and then onto the lever into trans - this also looks fine. Cable does not look like it slipped or came out of adjustment? What else can it be?
