Treadwear Issue with Ventus S1 Noble 2 Hankooks

Very likely- contractual obligation on both parties. Supplier (Hankook) factors in a percentage of replacements (oppsies) just like other manufactures and warranty them out. Likely also count on people like me who just gave up and didn't bother with it and just replaced out of pocket. In my case dealership didn't help and it was also before the bulletin came out about assistance being available. I fault Ford for the selection of the tire. Hankook makes them. Ford has the specs.

Follow up on my visit to Discount Tire. Discount contacted Hankook and was advised that nothing they can do if tires are over 4/32". However, I was at the Ford dealer for some non tire issues and discussed with their tire specialist. Within 15 mins he assured me this would be taken care of by Hankook. They identified feathering and tread separation on the inside tread of the tires. Credit will be $180/tire (15500 miles on my Explorer). New tires go on Monday.

That's exactly what I got. $180 per tire at 16k miles. I got Michelin Defenders put on today for a $45 per tire premium over replacement Hankooks or Yokohamas.

So asked my local dealer about my tires, as they have chunks coming off and they told me to call Hankook, as there was nothing they could do about it.

Had Yokohama Parada Spec-X on my 2011 Limited. Was very happy with them.

Your dealer is a turd. Go to another one. After asking around to find the right service writer, mine new exactly what to do, had done it for "many" other Explorers, called Hankook, handled all the paperwork, etc. Literally could not have been easier. Maybe you have to find a dealer that likes to install tires. Mine has a large tire / oil change department.

The Michelins that replaced the OEM Hankooks:

How’s the ride and noise? Michelin Defenders, correct?

Yeah Defender LTX M/S. Ride is more comfortable than the Hankooks, but steering response is notably worse. So it drives more like a truck than a car, a predictable tradeoff. But I've only driven around for about an hour so far. Maybe steering will be better after they break in.

No noise complaints so far.

22k and they’re worn about 50-60%
Same tires

That doesn't seem that bad. Mine were about the same wear level at 16k miles. But the real problem was the "chipping" as shown in this picture. To me that's a quality problem not a "tires-are-wrong-for-the-vehicle" problem.

I may try another dealer, going to call Hankook tomorrow. I have the dealer paperwork noted that the tires are chipping, so that is a good start.

Stay on your dealer!

Pull out your owners manual and show them the section that says first 12 months 12k the TIRES ARE COVERED FULLY!

We had 8500 miles when we noticed the issue. We were first referred to the tire shop where they acted like they would only prorate them but had to check if it was bad enough to do so.

We have the dynapros now and they are no better. I will never purchase another vehicles without first insisting on michelin tires. Dealbreaker from now on. Most if not all of the 2018 explorers on the lot at the time we had ours replced had MICHELIN tires.

We will be lucky to get 20k out of TWO sets of Hankooks. We have 16k now and the dynapros are trash!

Ford should be ashamed!

The 18" wheels come with Michelins and the 20" wheels come with Hankooks. Seems backwards. They should be putting the higher-quality tire on the upper trim levels.

Just a note: Tread "chunking" and delamination can be caused by rubber with low silica content, too soft rubber, abnormal heat buildup caused by overload or wrong pressure, suspension issues (shock/strut), tire scrubbing from high speed/tight cornering, and more.

I warned my coworker with a '17 Explorer with similar miles to mine of this issue. Sure enough she looked and has the exact same "chipping" as shown in my post #252 above. I have a feeling there're thousands of Explorer owners out there with this issue that don't even notice it.
