what should I look for?

I might be looking for a new inexspensive head unit. what all should I look for? what brand should I get? one with an aux input? how many pre amps should i need? thanks for the help.

If you want to have the option of throwing external amps on your interior speaks as well as an amp for some subs, then you should look at a deck that has 3 sets of preouts. As for going for inexpensive but reliable options, I like to stick with alpine, pioneer and kenwood. I also like JVC, but I have to admit the looks of some of their decks leaves a lot to be desired. Most decks with 3 set of preouts will have some type of auxilary input, which type of input doesn't matter because there are adapters made for all of them so for example you can hook up a CD changer that has RCA outputs to an alpine deck with a simple adapter.

I would look for one that is XM or Sirius compatable.
You can make the jump into that at a later date.
