I just swapped the 4405 transfer case in my 97 4.0 with one out of a 98. How can I find out what chain is in the 98. I swapped the back half of my 97 onto the 98 to get VSS output. Everything works fine except that there is a lot of slack in the chain and I am getting a loud clunk or pop when I put a load on it in 4WD hi or low. I pulled the shift motor and sensor and can feel the chain. There seems to be a lot of slack when compared to the chain that is in the 97. Will the chains interchange. I have found that in sept of 98 they went to a one inch chain. How can I find out what chain is in mine without pulling it and cracking it open again.

Ok the 4405 has three chain options:

HV-070 1.25" Wide with 2 blue link and ET guides 98-Up
HV-051 1.25" Wide with 1 Blue Link 90-97
HV-067 1.00" Wide for Torque On Demand Units (9/98-Up)

It will be difficult to find out without opening, by the year and if its a TOD (Torque on Demand) you can get an answer.
That info is enough to narrow down to the one you need, I know it can be confusing.

I would definitely not interchange them, and most definitely not use the 1 inch one if you don't have a TOD unit.

Hope it helps!

Dear Specialists,

please be so kind and tell me the differences
between the following BW4405 Transfer Case
Chains for the V6 Explorer SOHC
- >97 Morse HV051
98 -> Morse HV070
They seem to be identical, only the blue marks
and the Morse numbers are different.

Kind regards

Wolfgang
