What's the code machine?

I've seen some mentions about "pulling the codes" when a difficult problem is encountered.

I know about the idea of the car communicating errors with ignition circuits etc, but is this something I could do with my 87 B2 2.9l efi? I don't have any problems right now (aside from a blown lifter, which is being tended to as we speak) but if I can pull "the codes" when needed, where/how do I do this?

Where can I get the code-getter device, and approximate cost?

Not that I'm a broncophobe, but for the Navajos and the Explorers, the 'under the hood' subforum stickies are well stocked with code generation and pulling information
