I'm about to convert my Ranger to 4x4. While everything is apart I'm going to weld my spiders, eliminate the C-clip, and add an oil drain plug. Where did you guys put your drain plug to make sure it didn't block anything?

i read somewhere people drill out one of the bottum bolts of the diff.
im looking to put in a drain plug sometime this week so when i do i'll take a pic and let u know how it goes.

Please do. Thanks for the help.

I was thinking I could just use a pipe bung, but then I'd have it hanging out to be the first thing a rock strikes if I ever actually take it anywhere (which is unlikely, but still...)

I drilled into the lower bolt hole.

It's a little hard to see, but the hole is there on the inside above the bottom-center bolt hole.

I'd put a helicoil in that hole so the threads don't wear with repeated bolt removal (infact, I'd helicoil every single one of those holes, you'll never have to worry about a stripped thread afterward).

Thanks for the pic, junkie. Unfortunately, the parts truck I was going to buy had a cracked engine block. At this point I'm leaning toward just leaving the truck 4x2 for simplicity.

What's with that jig, Junkie?

Another great idea from the Junkie...

Spreads the housing to release the carrier bearing preload for removal/replacement of the differential carrier.

Not an absolutely-mandatory item for diff work (some guys like to do it the hard way by prying & hammering), but it does make it so much easier to just pull it out or put it in by hand.
You do have to be careful of over-spreading it though, which would quickly ruin a housing (max is .015" for the D35 IIRC).

I asked because when I changed my front gears I discovered my case was out 3 thousands.
