New to Explorers, think I have a timing chain tensioner issue

I replaced all the chains, cassettes, and tensioners in my '98 4.0L SOHC (VIN E). I found a lot of useful info on this forum and I highly recommend the helpful threads posted by 2000StreetRod. He has a lot of knowledge about this engine. Concerning the noise "coming from the front left top...

    CEL code PO455

It's good to find a thread that states a problem and then the correction is found and added into the thread. My wife just came back from a trip to town and said the check engine lite came on. I used Torque Light on my smart phone and found P0455 had been logged. Googled it, saw there was a lot...

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

I've experienced that type of thing before but this doesn't make me feel bad. All of the solenoids were replaced with the rebuilt valve body in the original transmission and I put that valve body in the used tranny. But thanks for adding your tip. It may help someone else that reads this.

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

I considered pulling a tranny from a junk yard. Pick-N-Pull is one of my favorite amusement parks to visit. I've been known to take my wife there on dates. But from what I've read about the transmission for this vehicle, they are notorious for having problems so I opted to go with a tested used...

How to: SOHC V6 Camshaft Timing

If the camshaft was not timed properly, there is a good chance that there were valve strikes--piston hitting open valve at TDC. The valves could be damaged. The passenger side valve camshaft is driven by a chain on the rear of the engine, so the engine must be out of the car to work on it. You...

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

Ok, unless anyone asks questions for me to answer, this should be my final post. I was able to get a second transmission under my warranty but once again got caught up in other projects. A couple of weeks ago I finally came back to this project. I put in the new/used tranny and made sure that I...

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

Well, before going further, I realized the fluid was burned. Yesterday I went to visit a friend of mine who is a mechanic and told him. His response is don't bother to go further, replace or rebuild this transmission. He said without the filter, the fluid would not have been circulating properly...

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

After using FORScan to monitor every possible transmission test point and not finding any problems, I decided it was time to inspect the valve body on this replacement transmission. I don't particularly like doing this as I don't have a drain plug in the pan or a pan large enough to catch the...

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

Ignore my previous question. After reviewing the data in FORScan, I see now that the TR3 does activate when the voltage rises. I also found that the voltage value is 1.62 V.

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

My boss (Mrs. Archer) said I could work on the Explorer today and before the words, "Thank you, Dear" could have reached across the room I was out the door heading for the garage. I believe I found a problem and hope I can get some feedback here, but I will be searching other threads. I used...

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

Update: I complained above about threads that did not have a conclusion and I don't want my threads to be like that. But, I still do not have a conclusion. Shortly after my last entry I became involved in another project--21 acres of land I purchased and needs development comes first. I...

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

No, but after rebuilding the engine I did a fluid flush by disconnecting the cooling lines and pumping the old fluid out while pouring in new. Had great flow at that time. Also, the pump was replaced with the transmission. But, I will do as you suggest. You have me wondering now if the cooler...

'00 sport SOHC 5r55e battery draining quickly.

Yeah, sounds familiar. A bit of tragedy here. Her Morgan mare died a few weeks ago. She would let it "mow" the back yard for us, right outside the slider from her home office. In the summer, she would leave the door open and that mare would often stand just outside it with her head inside hoping...

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

Update...I just took a test drive with FORScan recording several parameters. The VSS, OSS and a few other parameters stayed at zero for the whole drive. With more than one problem, I'm thinking a connector possibly came loose somewhere.

'00 sport SOHC 5r55e battery draining quickly.

I thought that was a common thing. I do it all the time. She has a 1952 Ferguson TO-20. Dang thang's older than me (but not by much).

    Transmission Shifting Problem, '98 XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V6 SOHC, 5R55E

So a few months after resurrecting this SUV (1998 Explorer XLT Resurrection), I started having transmission shift problems. Not surprising since the vehicle sat unused for 10+ years in a garage before I started working on it. I've explored a lot of different threads here and tried a lot of...

    Heater Problem '98 XLT 4.0 L SOHC

Update Well, the new blend door is installed and I can now control whether I get cool air out of the vents or hot air. There were some challenges getting it installed. The blend door kit (Dorman 902-221 Blend Door Repair Kit) instructions directed me to cut a hole in the bottom of the plenum...

    Heater Problem '98 XLT 4.0 L SOHC

I got that puppy out It wasn't easy, but I finally got the blend door out through hole I cut behind the glove box. I imagine that if the top of the blend door post had actually broken off, it would be easier to get the door out. But mine just had a chip in the top of the post so the door was...

    Heater Problem '98 XLT 4.0 L SOHC

Hi crunchie_frog. You've come to my rescue again. Thank you! I stopped looking for the problem with the vacuum to the heater control valve and will come back to it later. After reading your post and koda2000's post, I realized that the real problem must be with the blend door so I pulled the...

    Heater Problem '98 XLT 4.0 L SOHC

Hi koda2000. Thanks for your input. The heater control valve does operate with a hand pump, but when connected to the vacuum system, it never closes giving continuous hot water flow to the heater core. I will want to fix that problem someday but the bigger issue now is the blend door...it is...

    Heater Problem '98 XLT 4.0 L SOHC

Hi crunchie_frog. Thank you for responding. I'm not sure which switch you are referring to. I think your are referring to the one that has five or six vacuum lines to it. I haven't figured out a way to test it. It must be functioning at least partially because I can see one of the doors open and...

    Heater Problem '98 XLT 4.0 L SOHC

Found the answer to question number 2 above. Took the panel apart and got to the controls. Tested heat control rheostat with DMM. It tested good. Don't have a wiring diagram for this so not sure where to look next. Still hoping someone can advise me.
