I know someone mentioned that bolt in a Youtube video on changing 4.6 timing chains for our Explorers. I believe he mentioned the length. I don't remember which one as I was just watching them to see what's involved for when I do mine. This thread may prove to be helpful...
How come it is so often suggested that if you want your oil pressure up when you first start your engine to floor it? I've read on this forum a few times where it is claimed that the engine won't start with the pedal to the floor. It seems like there is some sort of electronic over ride to not...
Can't you just hold the pedal to the floor and turn the engine over until the oil pressure comes up? The engine won't start with the pedal to the floor. Seems like it would be easier.
No way would I try loctite. For one you would have to make sure the threads on the oil pan and bolt are bone dry or it's worthless. You should absolutely try a new bolt and torque it to spec or maybe a few ft.lbs more.
I've been working on cars for 50 years and have never heard of anyone having...
On my 05 the drain plug does not use a crush washer. There is a seal built onto the plug so you don't want to use a crush washer. Either way you should get a new bolt. They are 5 dollars. If you have a torque wrench find the torque setting. I believe it's about 20 ft. lbs.
It just occurred to...
I also filled mine with silicon after seeing something on this site. When putting in new plugs when blowing out my number 8 plugs a ton of rust came out but I didn't realize where it was coming from. I agree with the above that Ford's engineers did nothing to fix this problem. Mine is an 05 so...
In 2016 when I bought my Explorer the right rear wheel bearing went out. I saw online they can be a problem so I took it to a mechanic. When I went to pick it up the mechanics were telling me what a pain in the butt it was trying to press that bearing out. Their press wouldn't push it out so...
Here is a complete knuckle assembly for a 2004 Aviator:
Amazon says it fits my Explorer also so they must be the same. That may be a good idea to buy the entire knuckle assembly. The entire knuckle assembly is much more expensive but might be well worth it compared to the battles I've heard...
It would be great to have actual mechanics who have experience with many different brands of aftermarket parts tell us what manufacturers that they trust. Just because a person has had a good experience with a brand doesn't mean much when you only have statistic of one or just a few. Mechanics...
I also used Moog tie rod ends and they also come with zerk fittings and you could see the grease in them. I thought Moog was a good brand but have been hearing some negative feedback on some of their parts. I'd like to find out who does make quality aftermarket parts. I didn't know some joints...
I wouldn't. Last week I put in a new lower ball joint. I had replaced both upper control arms with ball joints made by Detroit Axle in May. During the disassembly for the lower ball joint I damaged the boot to the upper ball joint. Inside there was NO grease that I could see but I couldn't see...
Some of us think the smart move is to replace the fluids before the maintenance schedule says to. I believe I read here where a person asked a mechanic at a dealer why such a long service interval for the transmission. The mechanic was honest and told him because Ford wants you to buy a new...
I am going to guess he recommended to just replace the filter and drain and refill with fresh transmission fluid due to having no knowledge of the maintenance that's been done on your transmission. A flush on a transmission that has not had regular maintenance (more than the manual states) can...
In the center of the transmission drain plug there is a special type of screw. In the center of the bolt it has a Torx screw. That is the screw you remove to check your level. Don't remove the larger bolt or you'll drain the tranny. The bolt is hollow and reaches up into the pan about an inch...
Thanks for the reply. I thought I'd read there was a difference between the early 2002 and the rest of the 4.6 engines which is why I am asking. I can't imagine the dimensions being different however all the ads say 1997-2002. I can't imagine those dimensions being different but what do I know.
Looking on Amazon and Ebay the cam hold down tools claim to only fit 1997-2002 engines. I would think the same cam hold down tool would work for the 2005 but maybe I am missing something. They also list the same tool for the 5.4 and 6.8 v10 for those same years. I don't want to buy a set and...
Thanks for following up! My 05 4.6 blew the number 7 plug. Fortunately the threads were still there so it must have worked it's way out slowly. I still have a helicoil kit for the repair in case another blows. It may have been Fordtechmakuloco that said to torque them to 20 to 25ft.lbs or...
