Just an update...
Unfortunately, I don't believe this is going to turn into a project thread. At least, not at this moment. I ordered and installed the GPS module from earlier in this thread and now the Nav is working fine. The backup camera hasn't had an "outage" in a couple weeks now...
Thanks for the tip on the location of the grommet. I've been going nuts trying to find a way through the firewall without drilling. I'll give that a go this weekend.
After looking at CarPlay, that may be my best possible route. I didn't want to install any external mics, nor did I want to...
Very nice, thanks for your answers ... I'd also be curious, how did you get the power wire for your amp through the firewall? I've had no luck finding the grommet that is supposedly behind the glovebox, or any other grommet for that matter.
And I guess another question would be, what made you...
That's a pretty nice-looking setup. Literally the only part of this I don't have figured out is that Sync bracket part, so I don't really have any technical questions for you. Here's a few others though:
1) Where did you mount the mic (or did you not have to)?
2) I assume, with CarPlay, I'd...
Found a great still shot of the piece I need a part number for:
Red arrow points to the 4.3" non-MFT display
Green arrow points to the non-MFT Sync module
Orange arrows point to the plastic bracket that connects them <<< need this part number
Anyone able to help me out with this part...
I'll do my best. Need to get that last question answered before I can really begin (where does Sync physically connect in a non-MFT vehicle?) ... and if I blow a ton of money on this right up front, my wife will flip a table so I need to take a measured approach. I will definitely update this...
Sync really isn't the end all, be all. Aftermarket radios have most/all of the features covered, but one thing Sync has going for it is the factory look. I use a USB drive loaded with about 30GB of music on a daily basis, so it'd be nice to keep that input where it is now, hidden behind a...
That does sound like my issue, before it evolved into showing the GPS with an X through it permanently. I'm going to force a confrontation with them soon (I don't mean that negatively, I just mean I'm going to force them to pay attention to my issue one way or another).
The Scosche kit does...
Thefranchise713, you're absolutely correct. I had the center console apart today to see what I was dealing with. The good news is, Sync works without a screen connected to it at all, so I have options. The bad news is, I don't believe I can get to the Nav's GPS antenna without tearing the...
Thanks for the link, Peter.
I'm still leaning toward ripping the whole thing out, though. I'm also really frustrated with my Explorer's backup camera ... it'll work fine for a week, then not at all for the next two weeks. Then it'll "fix itself" and work fine for 5 days, only to stop working...
I've heard back from Shaay and my APIM is thankfully still under warranty. That's great news, but I still suspect the GPS antenna is dead, not the APIM.
Could anyone confirm, is this the part number I would need for the GPS antenna?

Hi Shaay!
The SD card that came with the vehicle is an A4. As far as I know, A4 is the latest version that will work with my 2013. If that's incorrect, I suppose I could seek out a newer version. I've already got a replacement A4 on its way to me, since it cost me a scant $12 from eBay.
I'm...
I checked it once early on, when it was working semi-properly, but I haven't lately. When the Nav is up, the GPS with a red X icon is up full-time. I know that doesn't necessarily mean "zero satellites, 100% of the time", so I'll check it later.
I was successful over lunch hour, upgrading from 3.6.2 to 3.8. It did not, however, fix my Nav problem so I'll go back to my original question: any techie-type folks here have experience with ripping out the 8" MFT/APIM?
Fantastic! I was reading through that thread just now but had only managed to get to about post #200. Thanks for saving me some time!
I will get the update installed over lunch today and will report back.
I just got done chatting with a Sync agent, and was told that I could have my dealership do it for free. I will look for the link to download the update myself though, as I'd prefer to just do it myself. Thanks for the input.
Peter,
Thanks for the info. I signed into my account on Syncmyride.com. It says my Sync is at the latest version but that my last update was done on March 22nd, 2014. 3.8 seems like it was released in late 2015.
Any ideas?
Hey Peter!
First I want to apologize, I was feeling the burn of frustration when I posted yesterday and I made a rather incomplete post. Sorry about that. Second, I understand and appreciate that you've never had Nav issues, but I certainly am and there's a lot of others who have as well.
So...
As the subject line says ... I am fed up with the crappy Nav unit in my 2013 Explorer. I've only owned the Ex for 2 months, and the Nav hasn't worked right for 99% of that time. The dealer is completely ignoring me. That being said:
I'd like to know what's involved in gutting the 8" MFT and...
Nice, how did you end up mounting the tweeters from the component set?
I intend to amp everything by the time I'm done with this. I was thinking of replacing both rear and both 3rd-row speakers and running all four as two 2-ohm loads on the amp's two rear channels. I don't know though, it'll...
