Hopefully your tank is close to empty, if not you can defuel from the inlet pipe with a small hose after removing the inlet hose. Otherwise, the tank will be too heavy. Remove the spare tire for more room. Support the tank with a floor jack, use a board under the tank to prevent damage...

Engine Overheated, Now a Hissing Sound From the Engine

For future reference... Aviators have emergency procedures to get them back on the ground safely when a problem occurs. Similar approaches I have for driving. I.e. Temp rises, heater on full fan to HI, just like you did. One step further, if the needle pegs or scary noises are heard, pull...

Fuel Injector Not Working. How do I find the bad one? Need help!

If you're running a screw into plastic? A couple of inch pounds at best... just snug to the feel - don't want to strip the plastic.

Update - the 'climate control had failed to DEF – no vacuum leak detected from the engine compartment' turned out to be that the plastic vacuum line was pushed too far into the rubber boot connected to the 3/8" plenum tap (driver side; the double line boot where one line goes to the canister...

I found my write up from my last fuel pump change - honestly, you don't want to go cheap on a fuel pump assembly. ----snip---- Pressure test on the existing pump (Airtex c. 2016) was between 22 and 28 psi. Dropped the tank, pulled the old unit and the original receipt from the online purchase at...

I have an earlier version of this Zurich unit that Harbor Freight carries. Works well, indicates codes with summary, live data (i.e. fuel trim), resets codes. I may have to get an upgrade. https://www.harborfreight.com/zr8s-obd2-code-reader-with-live-data-57667.html I'm sure there are other...

My CEL burned out long ago (I think, at least it doesn't come on). Can help with passing inspections. A decent code scanner will be a much bigger help than the CEL. Scan monthly or when a problem is apparent, like poor acceleration / loss of power.

Try my best to explain lol

I don't believe the computer talks to the fuel pump beyond sending voltage to the fuel pump relay for it to come on. The fuel pump could have a problem, or the pressure regulator which may be integral with the pump assembly, as well as the fuel level sensor (often all part of the same...

    2001 Explorer 5.0 P0174 Code

Problem Solved - Post Op Analysis (thankfully not a postmortem; additional details available higher in the thread). I think the initial problem that kicked this mess off was a failed EGR diaphragm. Theory is the EGR diaphragm failed, the control solenoid worked overtime to try and compensate...

Additional testing indicates the wiring harness to the coil is good, therefore the coil driver in the PCM is bad - was bad from the start, couldn't tell with all the other problems. Warranteed replacement arrives Tuesday. The corner mechanic will install as he needs to flash the new unit and...

Tracking down root cause of p1132/ p0300/ p0172

Next, consider the age of the sensors on the vehicle, if they're original, test for proper resistance and operation. If they're problematic replace, and the wiring to and from the sensor to the computer must be verified as good (check continuity, resistance, manipulation of wires while testing...

Tracking down root cause of p1132/ p0300/ p0172

A few things with these near antique vehicles, rubber gets soft, plastic gets brittle, wires break. Trace every vacuum line, I found breaks in places never expected. Get a mighty vac pump and draw a vacuum on each section and see that it holds. Check out this thread: 2001 5.0 Eddie Bauer...

    1996 Explorer Eddie Bauer thermostat

Some cars have idiot gauges, really an idiot light in gauge format. The needle goes to a preset location unless the sender indicates an out of range condition. My oil pressure gauge is like that. Maybe you now have a real temperature reading.

Props to 1Neptune! I cleaned (didn't replace, yet) all the grounds I could find in the engine compartment. Two on the firewall near the PCM, one on the other side of the firewall that I think goes down to the engine. Five near the battery, three on the radiator support (1 battery ground, two...

    2001 Explorer 5.0 P0174 Code

The bad news is it still runs like crap. But still some good news! I ran it through a 'drive cycle' as defined by the Ford manual - cruise at 40 mph for 10 min, 50mph for 10 min, accelerate at 3/4 throttle 3x, accelerate 45-60mph decelerate no brakes 3x, etc. - drove for 35-40 min. after all...

    2001 Explorer 5.0 P0174 Code

Good news and bad news... Good news is the coil 2 connector install went swimmingly. Tested the wire several times for resistance, checked movement, which indicated the coil end of the wire. Stripped back the wire and tested more, which indicated that I was past the problem area, though it...

Old school only!! Wiring harness testing??

Upon closer inspection of the back of the PCM Connector, the pins are inverted from the diagram posted by J_C - the convention being that the technician would twist the connector so as to face the front of the vehicle to have the same orientation as the diagram, the left and right sides of the...

    2001 Explorer 5.0 P0174 Code

The rest of the testing, on the correct wire, entailed continuity and resistance (good at first), then stray voltage, followed by testing for a ground, then resistance while wiggling the wiring harness - which revealed resistance variations when moving the coil connector. So, next step is to...

J_C, the diagram is looking at the face of the PCM, right? Same as looking at the back of the connector?

QUESTION ABOUT GAST TANK BELT - EXPLORER 98/01 -

One significant question...🤔 Medina said his gas tank is resting on the protection shield. My rig doesn't have a protection shield under the gas tank! How do I get one? 😆

Back to this thread... 410Fortune, only 1 code right now P0352. I considered the break out box a separate question, sorry if that was a foul. (This a break out box would come in handy, if it existed). J_C, this is where we left the other thread, testing the wires! So... following the...

QUESTION ABOUT GAST TANK BELT - EXPLORER 98/01 -

That would be a viable temp fix, not sure if there is a path to run the strap over the frame, as well as a point of support by the mount bolt - that could be fabricated, by then might as well fabricate the part itself?
