    A4LD Transmission Question

The modulator is new one that was put on just a few months ago when they did a full rebuild (minus the valve body they just put on a week ago). I also was not able to find any sort of vacuum leaks anywhere.

    A4LD Transmission Question

Hi. I've got a 92 Explorer with 4.0 OHV and A4LD transmission. I just had the transmission rebuilt and valve body replaced, and the transmission works better than ever. Nice, tight shifts and the correct RPM's except in one particular case that I noticed the other night. If i'm going 65-70 and...

    CVT Transmissions

Yes, I read about the new type of belts, and they're supposed to be VERY durable. But, I think to myself, would I rather have to replace a belt (CVT) after 50k miles or have my tranny rebuilt (A4LD)? I bet it's a LOT cheaper to have a belt replaced :) Heck, if I did off-roading a lot, I could...

    CVT Transmissions

I agree, CVT's are definitely the wave of the future; the next car I buy will certainly have it. I will say this though, as much as I complain about the A4LD, it does perform well (when working right) as far as auto tranny's go. Very good, quick shifts, changes at good choices of RPM's and...

    CVT Transmissions

213k on your original? WOW. How in the heck did you manage that? What is your secret? Hrm, I would've thought that I'd be seeing pigs fly when someone had that many miles on their A4LD :D This has gotta be a record with this tranny I'd think. I'm impressed...

    CVT Transmissions

I agree, there certainly are good and bad rebuilds. But, from the numbers I've seen ~50% of A4LD's need a rebuild by 50k. That's just poor designing. And, if you make it to 100k on a tranny, you're just a lucky as all get out. Seeing posts from a tiny minority who got 150k out of them, just...

    CVT Transmissions

Well, I guess it depends what you mean by efficiency. They are actually very efficient, and the current ones can handle high-torque very well. And, with the way they work, they also give you better gas mileage than an auto or manual tranny. In addition to that, they will give you better...

    CVT Transmissions

Just want others input on a hypothetical thought. I have a 92 Explorer with the horrific, unreliable A4LD transmission (going into the shop AGAIN next week). Anyway, I'm read some info on CVT transmissions, and they seem they can be made very compact and are very simple. So far, they have also...

    A4LD question

Just a tad :D If I want smoke, I'll just use a can of Seafoam :)

    A4LD question

I was just going to post how the transmission shop did it. Pretty much the same way, only difference is, they didn't use the smaller tubing, they simply slid the larger hose OVER the transmission dipstick tube. Same thing really, just removes the need for the smaller hose. On a funny note, one...

    Dealer installed alarm / anti-theft

Now that somebody has confirmed what the box does, I think I now have the guts to try it out. It's set in the middle now. I'll probably turn it up some, since to me it's not really sensitive enough. It takes a GOOD hit to activate it. Now, I certainly don't want it so sensitive that it goes off...

    Dealer installed alarm / anti-theft

I think shock sensor would be the appropriate term. Still wonder what that knob does for sure. I could play with it, but knowing my luck, I'd f*** something up beyond all recognition :) I'm just THAT good!

    Dealer installed alarm / anti-theft

It does have a ford sticker on it, so I'm thinking it's a Ford part. I don't think it has a motion sensor. You have to whack the body with a decent whack to get it to beep or anything.

    Dealer installed alarm / anti-theft

Hi. I have a '92 Explorer with a dealer installed anti-theft system. Under the dash, zip-tied just to the right of the fuse panel is a small black box with a small white knob on it. I cannot find a part number on that box. It is connected via 4-5 wires to a larger black box under the dash...

    A4LD question

I followed the manual's instructions. With the engine running, put on the parking brake, cycle through drive, neutral, rev, and park, then check it (on a flat surface). I did make the mistake of checking it with the car off *once*, but learned quickly.

    A4LD question

I did a search for this and didn't find anything. I just had the kickdown cable assembly replaced by the transmission shop on my '92 ex with A4LD tranny. Well, now there's too much tranny fluid in there (why they even touched it I don't know). Anyhow, I really don't want to have to take it back...

    Explain your Login name!!!

Just found this thread now. Well, years and years ago, when I first got internet, I was wanting to log onto IRC chat and needed to come up with something (didn't want to use my real name or parts of it there). Well, I happened to be eating some beef jerky at the time, so that's what I used. I...

    'Fun Hump Day eBay/craigslist Auctions'

Ahh, yes, sounds like he's describing sleep paralysis in the auction, quite unrelated to the picture I believe... http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/paralysis.html I've had it a few times, freaked me out until I figured out what it really was. I do believe in spirits, but I don't believe they're...

    Weird braking/pulling problem

Hrm, possibly. The brake place had this to say; since it's only pulling when the wheel is in certain positions it wouldn't be the brakes. If it was the brakes, it would pull no matter where the wheel is. I'm wondering if it could be something else in the front end thats wearing out.

    Weird braking/pulling problem

Hi. I've got a weird problem that no one seems real sure of what is the real cause. About 6 months ago I took the X in to get the brakes done because it was pulling to the left while braking. Long story short, I waited too long, and it needed a LOT of work. At any rate, the brakes themselves...

    Flickering lights and voltage...again

Well, to let everyone know, to maybe help someone else with the problem, it is solved. With the help of a couple of mediocre wiring diagrams, I was able to figure out what went where and what did what. Anyway, there are 3 wires coming off the regulator plug. One (white/black) just loops back to...

    Flickering lights and voltage...again

Well, I looked through all the many threads relating to flickering lights/jumpy voltage gauge and don't think any of them really quite help with my problem. I'll try to make the back story short. First, the battery cables were replaced only a few years ago, so I don't think they're the problem...
