Auto hubs grinding (big surprise) - searched

Thanks for the replies. I figured it wouldn't be an issue, but just wanted to make sure. I yanked the guts out of the hubs tonight and took it around the block with no problems so I think I am OK for a while. What gets me is that the hubs look fine. Nothing worn as far as the gears...

Auto hubs grinding (big surprise) - searched

OK, I give up. These hubs just plain suck. I hadn't heard any noise from the hubs since I last juggled the guts around in them, but this morning they started ginding and popping as soon as I pulled out. Many bad words followed - I even made up some new ones. I plan on just pulling the hubs...

Auto hubs grinding (big surprise) - searched

Thanks for the input Jim. If you want to diassemble your hubs, go for it and don't sweat it. It is very simple how they come apart and go back together. You will need a set of snap ring pliers (inner and outer) to remove the inner hub assembly and then remove the bearing. I drove the...

Auto hubs grinding (big surprise) - searched

Well, I went ahead and replaced the bearings (they were $18 for the pair though) since I had the time and set of snap ring pliers. Of course, when I took the old ones out they didn't look or feel bad. They didn't really have any more slop than the new ones. I figured why not waste a few more...

Auto hubs grinding (big surprise) - searched

Thanks for the info guys. That washer is not worn at all in my case. I did check it thoroughly when it was apart. The lighter fluid and matches idea is sounding better and better to me. Here's another theory: I was looking at the article on this page about the failing bearing in the end...

Auto hubs grinding (big surprise) - searched

Thanks for the replies. Like I said, I know there is no grease in the hubs since I took them apart and cleaned them thoroughly. Interestingly, I was at the dealer some time ago and he showed me a brand new set of hubs in the box and they were not dry as everyone says they should be. The had a...

Auto hubs grinding (big surprise) - searched

I searched for a bit about this problem and couldn't find anyone having the exact same symptoms as mine. I'll try my best to describe it ('94 XLT - 105k). While driving along WITHOUT 4wd engaged, what sounds like the left hub starts to grind like it is trying to engage. This seems to...

    Dead fuel pump?

Thanks for all the replies. Got it changed last Friday without too much incident. Damn good thing I had air tools though....10 year old rusted bolts can be stubborn. Was kind of a pain, but definitely worth the ~$400 I saved by doing it myself.

    Dead fuel pump?

Thanks for the replies. I got a new pump today and a new locking ring from Ford in case I booger up the old one taking it out. I pulled the connector and the fuse didn't blow when I turned the key on so I'm sure it is the pump that's bad. I already have the fuel line tool too. Now, I just...

    Dead fuel pump?

MY '94 died on Monday on the way to work. Couldn't hear the fuel pump running so I figured that was the problem. I had it towed home and checked it out further. The fuel pump fuse was blown, so I replaced it and it blew it again instantly. My fuel pump had been making excess noise for a few...

    rear brakes locking up???

My brakes do the exact same thing. I have read plenty of threads where other folks have the same problem. I have not replaced or adjusted my proportioning valve because I'm not exactly sure where it is. It does make sense that it might have something to do with the vacuum boost because my...

    rear brakes locking up???

410 - I see I spoke too soon - I guess it does have a valve after all. Thanks for the tips, I'll let you know what I find.

    rear brakes locking up???

JMan - Thanks. I have new shocks (Reflex) and have flushed the system numerous times. I have new rotors, bearings, pads, drums, shoes, all new hardware. This is getting old. It feels like the proportioning valve is sending way too much pressure to the rear brakes. Any idea where the valve...

    rear brakes locking up???

I have the exact same truck and the exact same problem with my brakes, even after replacing almost every brake system component. Help!!

    Old bearings in new races?

I think the bottom line is that I should have used my common sense and just put in new bearings - I always thought bearings and races wore as a set and needed to be replaced as a set. My friend (the truck mechanic) was adamant that you could reuse the bearings if the looked good and put them in...

    Old bearings in new races?

Thanks. That's what I always thought, but thought I'd check with a buddy of mine who's a fleet truck mechanic. He assured me that you could use an old bearing in a new race if the bearing was in good shape - says they do it all the time. I was leary about it but figured I'd trust him. Kind...

    Old bearings in new races?

I just replaced the rotors on my '94 4x4 and just cleaned and repacked the old bearings because they looked good still. The new rotors came with new races already in them - I didn't swap the old ones out. Now I am having a problem getting excess wheel play out of the hub assembly. If I torque...

Brake job - missing thrust washers?

I did a front brake job on my '94 4x4 today, and noticed that the 2 plastic thrust washers that sit between the bearing adjustment nut and the hub cam assembly are missing. Who knows for how long. The last time the rotors were off was about 30,000 miles ago at a local shop, but Ford replaced...

    Updated clutch master cylinder?

Well I figured nobody knew, since I checked with a few dealers and they weren't aware of an updated version either. Oh well, I must have had a brain fart again. My choices now for replacement are OEM Ford, Bendix, Wagner, Autospecialty (?), and Coni-Seal (?). Anybody have any experience or...

    Updated clutch master cylinder?

I think I need to replace the clutch master cylinder (again) since it is starting to squeak and getting a little tougher to shift, etc. I vaguely remember somebody on here mention a while ago that Ford or some aftermarket company makes and updated or upgraded master cylinder to replace the crap...

    rear wiper

A while ago, my rear wiper frequently wouldn't work when I hit the switch. Every time that happened, if I kept the switch on and went back and moved the wiper arm a little, it would start working then. My theory then was that since the rear wiper gets used so little (compared with the front...

    Manual transmission additives

lo_jack - Thanks for the reply. I changed the fluid last night and it looked nice and red coming out also, although there was a bit of metal shavings on the drain plug and some were suspended in the fluid (as expected). I put in semi-synth ATF since I had it already, but was hoping there...

    Manual transmission additives

It's time for me to change the fluid in my 5 speed, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with any additives for the fluid. It is getting a little harder to shift after it warms up and I am hoping something can alleviate it a bit. Thanks.

    Heater Core

I'm not sure about the procedure on a '97 but it is probably the same or similar as on my '94. It is actually one of the easier jobs I have done on it (surprisingly...I have heard all the horror stories). On my '94, there is a panel on the bottom side of the dash over the passenger side...

    cruise control speed amplification module

It is above/behind the glove box. Open the glovebox, press the sides of it in where the little stops are so you can open the glovebox all the way past the stops so it hangs down on the hinges. Look inside the dash above the glovebox and there it will be. I just did it on my '94...sorry...
