    Exhaust Replacement on 1991 Explorer

I was able to replace just the muffler and salvage the tail pipe for now. Got the muffler off using an air hammer and special bit. Thanks everyone.

    Exhaust Replacement on 1991 Explorer

I do have access to a welder, but there are too many wholes and they're too big. Think it needs to be replaced.

    Exhaust Replacement on 1991 Explorer

Thanks, but apparently the Dynomax 17415 isn't a direct fit in a 91-92. It is for a 93-94 which has a different hanger configuration. I'd like to avoid having to do any modifications to make it work. If I do have to cut the muffler out and try to reuse the old tail pipe, can I use a piece of...

    Exhaust Replacement on 1991 Explorer

I replaced the exhaust on my 1991 with the Dynomax 17430 kit a long time ago and have been pretty happy with it. However, the muffler has developed significant holes and needs to be replaced. Looks like the 17430 isn't available anymore, but it looks like you can still get some parts of the kit...

    Spare Doesn't Fit

Yep. The spare fits in the rear. Kind of a pain having to switch things around if you get a flat in the front, but guess it will work.

    Spare Doesn't Fit

Interesting. I'll have to check that out.

    Spare Doesn't Fit

I got a nail in one of my tires on my 1991 Eddie Bauer the other day and tried to put the spare on, but it wouldn't fit over the auto hubs because the center whole in the steel spare was too small. I've seen a couple of posts where people mention this. Any idea why this would be? Will the...

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

Finally figure this out a few months ago. It was the U-Joints. One side was frozen solid. Noise is gone now.

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

The noise seems to appear most when I reverse out of a parking space, but has also just occurred as I was driving down the road. When the truck was making the noise, I had my dad drive it forward and looked underneath and confirmed that the passenger side axle was spinning and the drivers...

Been awhile - have some auto hubs, tranny, brakes and other questions

This is the best place that I've found for the auto hubs: http://www.1aauto.com/1A/4WDrive/Ford/Explorer/1AFWH00001/298196 There are a good write-ups on cleaning the auto hubs on this site. I would try this first before buying anything. Here is one of the write ups...

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

Ok. Finally made the clicking noise when I wasn't wearing my dress clothes for work. With the truck NOT in 4x4, I had my dad drive forward while I looked underneath. The passenger side axle was spinning, but the drivers side wasn't rotating. I didn't notice if the front driveshaft was...

    Alignment Issues

Put the Explorer on the alignment machine tonight and it was way off. Did everything again and the car no longer pulls...not sure what I did wrong the first time, but thanks for the help everyone.

    Alignment Issues

No, I set both sides to 0 toe. Would this cause a hard pull to the right?
  14. S

    Alignment Issues

Help. I have access to an alignment machine and did an alignment on my 91. Caster was a little off and I had to turn the camber bushings on both sides to get the camber and caster within spec and similar on both sides. Adjusted the Toe as well, and now the car pulls to the right. Any idea what...

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

The problem is that I can't replicate the clunk with the hubs on. Its only happened a few times and I haven't noticed a pattern yet.

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

Yeah, I did a fair amount of research on this forum and I thought the symptoms sounded like it might be the auto hubs. The ratcheting noise is much less frequent now and not as loud after replacing the auto hubs...I've only heard it 3 times since I put the new ones on, but I don't drive the...

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

No problem. You're asking the right questions. If you're talking about the white plastic piece with the spring on the end, yes, it did come with new ones. I replaced the radius arm bushings last year with some polyurethane ones that I got from Summit. There doesn't appear to be any...

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

Thanks for the advice and no offense taken. Yeah, you're right about the joints not turning when the car isn't in 4x4...its just that a lot of people have suggested that as a possible issue. Unfortunately the problem is intermittent and only does it when I am unable to have someone look to see...

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

The ratcheting noise is back and so is the clunking when turing. It isn't as loud as before I replaced the auto hubs. When I checked the U-Joints, it looked like they might be going bad. Could they cause the same symptoms? I've seen some good write ups on doing the U-Joints, but does anyone...

    Removing the Starter

I ended up buying a Remy remanufactured starter locally. Bolted right up without any problems. FYI, They've changed the spade connector. You need to snip the connector that goes on the spade tip and crimp it onto a connector that is on the new starter. Then you need to heat the shrink...

    Removing the Starter

Pulled the starter and bench tested it. Starter is bad, so I'll be buying a new one. Any suggestions on which one to get? Looking to avoid any fitment issues. Also, are there differences when it comes to the connectors on the starters...specifically the spade connection?

    Removing the Starter

Thanks for the help. Pulled the top bolt from the hood using an extension and swivel. Bottom one was easy with an open ended wrench once I knew that I had the right bolt. Will get it bench tested this week.

    Removing the Starter

When I try to start the Explorer, it just clicks once. Starter does not engage and nothing else happens. The starter is covered in oil and grime, so that may be the reason the nut is stuck. I'll clean it with some brake clean and try again.

    Removing the Starter

It was pretty cold out, so I didn't get too far today. I did a voltage drop on the fender mounted relay and got 0.2 volts, which I thought would be ok. Is there anything else that I should look for?
  25. S

    Removing the Starter

Awesome. Thanks. I wasn't sure if I had the right bolt or not. Will try to take it off tomorrow when its a little warmer.

    Removing the Starter

My Explorer won't start. Has a new battery that is charged and I replaced the battery cables last year, so I don't think that is the problem. I'm trying to remove the starter to get it bench tested, but I'm a little confused. There are supposed to be two bolts that hold the starter in, but...

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

I just heard the noise that one time a few weeks ago after replacing both 4wd auto hubs. Haven't heard it since. Used to hear it all the time before replacing the auto hubs, so I'm not sure what's going on.

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

Crap. The ratcheting noise came back today. It's been about three weeks and I haven't heard the noise and now its back. The noise goes away when I put the truck in 4x4.

I replaced the hub on the passenger side a few days ago and haven't heard the noise since. Hopefully its fixed.

I had a problem with my transfer case motor previously and replaced the bushing thanks to this site. Fixed the blinking light on the dash.

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

Yeah, I went back and forth on repacking the bearing. There was a ton of extra grease in the hub when I cleaned them the first time and there was a fair amount of grease in the hub when I replaced it a week later. That's why I decided not to repack them...didn't want to add to the problem.

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

I went ahead and purchased an auto hub for the other side. Hopefully that will fix the problem. I'll check the bearings, ball joints and u-joint while I have it up in the air.

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

Thanks everyone. I'll check the U-Joints and Ball Joints. I checked the drivers side wheel bearing when I replaced the hub and it looked fine. No scoring, shavings, or abnormal wear. I didn't repack it since this was done a year ago and I don't drive the X that much. Plus I didn't want too much...

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

I rotated my tires a few weeks ago and now I'm getting an intermittent buzzing or ratcheting noise. I'm also getting a clunking noise, mostly making a hard left turn, but happens with right turns too. If I engage the 4wd when I hear the ratcheting noise it will stop. (I replaced my radius arm...

Thanks to everyone's help, I replaced the auto hub on my drivers side without any problems. Is it possible that I need to replace the passenger side...

Skydiver, Thanks for the explanation and links. They were very helpful. I repacked the bearings last year, so this should be an easy job...just wasn't sure if there was more to it than what you described.
