How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

The difference must be your V6. Trust me, sliding it back and forth with the V8 and then pulling it out without raising the engine eight inches is not possible. Believe me, if there was any other possible way of doing this without all that other work, I would have done it. There is only about an...

How to: Rebuilding a Borg Warner 4404

I also went with Cobra Transmission and had a similar experience. It's good to here they finally got their inventory information correct. Are they still recommending the 051 chain? I see that you went with the 070 chain... did it work well with this case?

How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

Don't Buy It! If it's the rack and pinion, you'll be sorry! They are very difficult to replace in these trucks. You have to remove the front suspension, axle, exhaust system, transmission, transfer case, separate the A/C lines, etc. and then raise the engine off the motor mounts eight inches...

    Front Axle bushings?

Resserecting an Old Thread... Lazzman, I found this in a search for the front axle bushings, because I have a bad one. By now, you probably know what the problem was and fixed it, or have sold the truck. But, for the sake of the forum and others that may have similar problems, I am curious as...

How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

Over 824,000 Miles This guy claims he has over 824,000 miles... and that was back in 2008. I found this on an old thread. Here's a link to the thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=231470&highlight=cleaning+engines

How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

Sounds good, but you should have changed that rack and pinion steering gear when the engine got overhauled because the engine has to be raised up at least 8 inches to get it out. I know, because I had to remove the whole drivetrain and raise the engine to get mine out.

How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

198,x.. I finally dug into my bottom end to change my rod and main bearings due to some knocking and low oil pressure. I have been working on it only when I have time, which isn't very often (mainly on the weekends). It still has excellent power and compression and doesn't burn any oil, so I...

    Rebuild Specs?

Some Changes I finally tore into my engine and discovered a possible miss-print on the specs I gave above. The Connecting Rod Side Clearance on my engine is around .013 to .015 inches. When I looked at the spec, it showed it should be .0010 to .0020 inches. That's one heck of a difference! I...

How to: Rebuilding a Borg Warner 4404

No one replied, so I went ahead and used the HV-051 on my brother-in-law's Explorer. He seems to be happy with it and has no problems to report. I'm still curious though what the difference is between those two chains. If anyone is able to compare the two, please post.:) Thank you, Gavin, for...

How to: Rebuilding a Borg Warner 4404

Yes it is... I measured my chain at 1 5/16" (10&11 links wide). When I ordered my chain, exactly like yours Gavin, they told me the correct chain was the HV-051 because they only go by the one blue link. I have compared the chains and don't believe it is the correct chain because it looks...

How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

If you love your X as much as I love mine, you'll bite the bullet and go to your local junk yard and find another door that's the same color as yours. This will keep you from getting that salvage title. Or, you can allow your insurance to total her; then buy her back and fix it - if you don't...

    Rebuild Specs?

Does anyone have the rebuild specifications for a 97 5.0 V8 AWD? I have been looking on the Internet, but haven't come across the cam, crank, rod, and piston rebuild (standard and oversize) specifications. Links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.:D

    Hats Off To Monroe!

I'm pretty sure that Monroe only makes OEM replacements with the Sensa-Trac, but that doesn't mean you can't find a taller shock that they make for a different vehicle.

    Hats Off To Monroe!

I'm not a metalurgist, but I would have to agree with ponkotsu. These days they're mounting shocks and springs to uni-body sheetmetal and, like I explained previously, the leaf springs are holding most of the weight. Also, please take another look at the photo provided by Sogsnakebite and you...

No problems at all! I still love them. I have 186K miles now and have done a lot of trails in the Rocky's, (some of which were never meant for a stock Explorer). I do recommend these for all of you out there that (like me) refuse to get rid of your old reliable EX's!!! I have a class IV hitch...

Fluid change (looking for a how to) and what to buy

Great tips, Lizard! Thanks. My brother-in-law's 96 Explorer was hard to start for about two weeks before it would not start at all - it ended up being a bad fuel pump. He would try to start it and it wouldn't start, then, he'd try again and it fired right up. After it was running, it seemed...

    Seafoam. Yes or no?

Just looking at those pistons, they look like they physically hit the spark plugs. Look at the crack... that's not from heat. Did the plugs break and fall into the cylinders? If not, it must have been a timing issue or a broken timing belt. Can anyone varify the authenticy of these photos...

    Seafoam. Yes or no?

Just an update... It took two weeks to run the fuel treated with Seafoam out of my tank, (413 miles and 25 gallons; that's 16.5 mpg). That's the best mileage I've seen in my truck since I've owned it. I don't know if it helped or not when I changed the plugs, as I only broke two off inside the...

    Seafoam. Yes or no?

Bruce, I would have to agree with ERUSH97XLT on this issue. I am one of those he referred to when he said many have had problems with Bosch. My engine acted exactly like yours - maybe even worse. After nearly $400 of changing parts and troubleshooting the rough running engine, I bit the bullet...

    Seafoam. Yes or no?

239, I have a full can of it right now in my F-150's fuel tank as I'm getting ready to replace the spark plugs in my 5.4L 3V engine and I'm hoping to remove them without any problems. I have already noticed about a two mile per gallon increase in my fuel economy and the truck seems peppier...

    blown woofer

Yes. The trick is... don't try to remove the speaker cover. It will come off, but I broke mine doing it. You are better off removing the entire right/rear interior pannel - it's easier to remove and you won't break anything. Also, it gives you full access to the small plastic subwoofer cabinet...

    Hats Off To Monroe!

Sorry it took me so long to reply, guys. For some reason this thread wasn't coming up with fresh replies in my "User CP" field until now. Squealing/Tensioner shaking?

Actually, it doesn't matter whether you're driving or stopped. If the idler is the problem, it will sometimes make more noise at higher RPM's than lower. When mine went bad, they chirped at idle and screamed, squealed or just made a rattling noise at higher RPM's. When the bearings are in real...

New guy here, Just bought 97 explorer xlt. pics.

Very nice for a first vehicle... I think you will like it - I love mine and will probably never sell. You've got just enough stuff to keep you busy for a while, not too bad. For your door locks, check out this link: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229335 For the back door...

    Squealing/Tensioner shaking?

Agreed. Also, those idlers are notorious for going bad. The rattling noise in the video sounded much like an idler. I have replaced a few of them on mine and my brother-in-law's Ex's.

1997 5.0 Mountaineer. Water reserve tank is always low.

Yes, I have to agree with budwich. I'm sorry, but if I'm right about the head gasket, then you will most likely see anti-freeze underneath the vehicle below the overflow tank or right front corner of the engine compartment. When the combustion gases inject air into your cooling system, it also...

    Loose parking brake

Yep! That's them - they go through the backing plate. Mine didn't have any wear on them, though - just rusty. I literally used a BFD and lots of oil and worked them back and forth. Good luck.:salute:

    Loose parking brake

I read the whole thread and decided to share my experience with the parking brake, maybe it will help, maybe not. Budwich touched on it, but nobudy really picked up on it. Budwich said, "The next area to check is the brake lever at both brakes... ensure that it is returning to its "resting" /...

1997 5.0 Mountaineer. Water reserve tank is always low.

I know you said no white smoke or smell, but I've seen this before - exactly as you described. You probably have a leaking head gasket, or even worse, a cracked head where the coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber and being burned. When it is a very small leak, you may not be able to...
