    Tranny went out...again..Need advice

I appreciate the input guys. Here is our decision. We are selling the Mounty. This was not an easy decision, and I found out this weekend, affected myself and my wife in an emotional way. I was surprised by that, because I've never been emotional over any car/truck. However, we got this...

    Tranny went out...again..Need advice

I have a 2004 Mounty. I just rolled 194K miles on it. Last May 2015, I got the OD light blinking. I had the tranny rebuilt. They gave me a 12 month 12K mile warranty. When I brought it in, I had a little over 165K miles on the odometer. So just under 30K miles later, the same thing...

Valve cover gasket job killed me

I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. Today I tried to replace the valve cover gaskets. However I noticed that the air intake on top of the engine had star bolts. This was not a problem because I had the proper tools. However there is one of the bolts that is way back on the back of the engine that...

    Valve Cover Gasket bad

Well I looked at the rear of my valve covers and on both sides have a very small, but starting to build up, oil leak. I know the gasket needs to be replaced. This looks like a time intensive job with all the crap to take off the top of the engine. While I have all this off, is there...

    FOB is dead. Suggestions?

One of my FOB's on my 2004 Mounty is officially dead. New battery in it, still didn't work. I've done some research and there are a bunch of third party people out there that make FOBs. Would you recommend using them, and if so, what is the most reputable one? I cannot tell just from...

    High Mileage Oil Suggestions

For a number of years I used fully synthetic, but that was about 3 years ago. Then I switched to a synthetic blend from Castrol. I guess I haven't been as consistent on oil types.

How many miles on your 3RD GEN! orig. tranny????

Well, question. Does it still qualify as the original transmission if it was recently rebuilt? If so, mine went 165K miles and then had to have it serviced.

    High Mileage Oil Suggestions

I rolled 165K miles on my 2004 Mounty recently. I am just curious, should I start considering a high mileage oil instead of conventional or fully synthetic? I read a thread on here about it, but it was more just back and forth. Appreciate opinions and specifically, examples of those who do...

In the market for 4th Gen, have some questions

First of all, from my profile you see I have a 2004 Mountaineer. Right now it's in the shop at 165K miles for the whole issue of it jumping from 1st to 3rd gear and the OD light flashing. My question is, do the 4th gen Explorers use the same transmission and or, if they do, with this...

    help! P0775 just now driving

Well, thanks for all the help. In the end, I have taken it to a transmission shop, considered to be the best in the area. $1800 and some change for a complete rebuild. The solenoid change would have done nothing. Oh well.

    help! P0775 just now driving

No I appreciate your honesty about it. Question thought if I may? I think I can do the solenoid pack myself as I have been reading and watching videos on how to do it. The servo bores, those are the things on the outside of the case right? Is that what people are replacing at this link...

    help! P0775 just now driving

OK Taking a step back. Test first before throwing parts at stuff right? lol I looked at this site: http://www.fordservoboretransmissionfixsolution.com/uploads/5/8/1/1/5811077/solenoid_ohm_reading_directions.pdf I am looking at my ecm, and I do have a middle connector. What I am not...

    help! P0775 just now driving

Thanks. BTW, I just rolled 165K on my Mounty today. So I guess my question is, after doing more research tonight, is the likely issue the Solenoids inside the pan, or the OD servo?

2004 Mercury Mountaineer. What's driving down the road just now and I got this code on my code reader. By overdrive light is flashing on and off with the service engine soon light. I am noticing that it is not going into second gear but skipping over it and going into third gear. Other than that...

    Clicking noise from front wheels.

I do have a question. And forgive me if this sounds ignorant. You mentioned the driveshaft. Are you talking about that long shaft that runs from front to back that is in the middle of the vehicle underneath? Or when you mention CV are you talking about the shafts going to each wheel? If...

    Fog lamp suggestions

2004 Mounty. Basically, some jerk smashed one of my fog lamps, but the other is fine. Anyway, they are the stock ones. I want to replace them with something better, but that is not going to break the bank and will fit in the original hole without any sort of body modification. Suggestions...

Rubber things for the rear lift gate

04 Mounty. A number of years ago the rubber cushions (I don't know the proper term) fell off the back of the liftgate. They were thick and cylindrical and there was one in the upper right and upper left corners so that when the glass portion of the lift gate was closed it cushioned the glass...

    T-Stat Housing mystery leak.

This is the long term plan. When I bought this part, I bought the entire assembly. I only had to separate it when I was maneuvering it into position. What's weird is like I said earlier that it didn't leak for nearly two months. Right now I am happy to report that the RTV solution seems to...

    T-Stat Housing mystery leak.

I'll let you guys know for sure in the morning. However, if this doesn't work, it's Motorcraft for me. I think someone has these parts locally for the same price as Rock Auto.

    T-Stat Housing mystery leak.

Update on the saga. Wish I had seen this thread before going to the autoparts store this morning. Anyway, apparently the upper piece had a crack by one of the bolts, presumably due to my over tightening. So I got a new one, put it on, and it started leaking worse than the one that was on...

    T-Stat Housing mystery leak.

Thanks for responding guys. I've been looking at this tonight while we've been chatting. The gasket for the t-stat is not kinked. It's sitting in there where it's supposed to be.

    T-Stat Housing mystery leak.

Well, there are no cracks I have confirmed that. It does look like it's leaking right where the upper portion meets the lower. One thing I meant to ask is, when I asked for a replacement Upper part, should it have come with an o-ring for that side of it, or is there just one for the part...

    T-Stat Housing mystery leak.

I have a 2004 Mounty. A bit of background. November 2014, noticed massive amounts of fluid leaking from the housing. Replaced the entire assembly with a Dorman part. Came with T-stat inside. Ran beautifully for about 2 months. For the last 2 months till now, I continue to have a slow...

    Clicking noise from front wheels.

2004 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0 FLEX. I noticed about two weeks ago that when coasting at lower speeds, say 30-45 mph, I hear a clicking noise. It's not super loud. It just goes click click click click and as I come to a slower and slower speed, it disappears. I had my son hang his head out the...

What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Well, Thursday I got the drivers side upper control arm and figured that it would go about the same as the passenger.....that is about where all hell broke loose. I got to the point where you are to bang up with a hammer on the control arm to separate it from the wheel, and did that for what...

What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Did something on my 2004 Mountaineer that I've never done on any car...I replaced my front upper control arm, passenger side. Waiting for my driver's side upper to arrive and put that one in. Did it all with hand tools and PB Blaster. Felt pretty stoked about doing it. I'm an IT guy. :salute:

Cigarette lighter ports not making good contact.

Sorry I should have been more clear. I stick in my car charger and the light comes on briefly, but then goes out. If I wiggle it to just the right spot it stays on. When I look down in there, bunch of crap.
