    Rear Tensioner Observation

Would'nt be a bad idea. New tensioner quieted everything though. They do wear out. I'll check after things warm up a bit.

    Rear Tensioner Observation

I just thought I'd share a little information I could not find on the site regarding the behavior of a bad rear tensioner on the 4.0 SOHC. On my car I was experiencing a non rhythmic, moderate clatter from the right side of the motor. It sounded like it was coming from the front, but you know...

    Engine Cradle

Greetings all. I am in the process of changing the primary timing tensioner in my 97 SOHC, for the second time (I hate this design). While in there and inspecting, I find that my balance shaft tensioner is cracked in two, but in place. I've done alot of reading and am trying to get to the stupid...

Can't post in 911, but Help please

Just posting up the results. It was the fuel pump. The old pump had continuity, must have been jammed or shorted. It would not run even when hooked directly to the battery. Dropped the tank and replaced the pump only. Car runs fine now. I had cut an access hole to try to do the work from inside...

How to: 1st Gen Gas Tank Fuel Pump Access Panel

Jeez. I am in the same boat as Phalp. I cut the access, and there is a heavy cross member that goes from side to side that is not going to let me pull the pump from inside. Waaaaah.

Resistance measurement from the pink/black to the black in the pump side of the connector? I'm guessing infinite resistance is a toasted pump? (no circuit) Thanks for the reply.

Looks like a fuel pump. I separated the connector at the gas tank. The ground read good, the pink and black wire had momentary full battery power right after the ignition switch was turned on then dropped down to a lower voltage. I still do not hear the fuel pump and I still have absolutely no...

I get the CEL. I dont have a reader. I'm drinking now. I'll get under there with a multimeter tomorrow to see if the FP is getting power. I appreciate your comments.

Can't post in 911, but Help please

Why did'nt I think of that . . . . the truck is in rapture!!! I dont know if anything has changed. I'm guessing that when I tested the fuel schrader valve the first time I was just seeing residual pressure. There is none now. I can put the key to on, I can crank, but there is 0 fuel released...

The cause is no fuel pressure. Now to figure out why. I have played musical relays, but don't hear the FP come on. Still looking. Thanks again.

No joy unplugging and re-plugging either sensor. I will try to clean them and try again. Will this car blink out the codes on the dash? Thanks for your replies

Thanks, I'll check the sticky. I did the overhaul. I'd be stunned if it's anything inside the motor. Like I say, It has run perfect for 300 mi, including to the hardware and a normal turn off. I'm betting sensor or FP.

I have a 97 SOHC. Replaced all timing chains and tensioners, replaced motor. Everything has been perfect for 500 miles. After driving all over today, including towing a boat, I went to the hardeware store and can't re-start. The car cranks fine and lights, or tries to, but immediately dies. I...

    1997 Connector question

Found an open plug from the vacuum reservoir and plugged it in, we'll see.

    1997 Connector question

Found it. I was waaay off. It was the crank position sensor. I re-routed it and plugged it in. I believe I only have 1 item left! There is a vacuum hose on the passenger side that I can't find a home for. It is one of 4 that are fed by a larger .25" hose attached to the upper intake manifold...

    1997 Connector question

I have the honor of putting my engine back together after someone else took it apart (hack mechanic). Amazingly I think I managed most of it. I suspect I'm missing a part on the passenger side. The drivers side has a flat plastic plate bolted to the side of the valve cover into which a square...

    Dropped TC nut.

I got it, thanks. I had to separate the trans as Corkey recommended. Thanks all!

    Dropped TC nut.

    Ill do that tonight.

    Dropped TC nut.

I hate the idea that I have to back the tyranny off, but I'm sure you're right. Argh.

    Dropped TC nut.

    It is SOHC. Thanks

    Dropped TC nut.

Still trying to fish this nut out. Do I risk damage if I rotate the engine backwards in my attempts to access the nut? Your advice is appreciated.

    Dropped TC nut.

As the title suggests, I lost a TC nut into the bellhousing. I can get another nut, but should I worry about having a loose one dancing around in there? TIA

    Left Cam cassette

Took the cassette out. The bushing is there, the cassette is just tight. Meh. Back in it went. Thanks folks!

    Left Cam cassette

Hmmm. I don't recall a bushing. That's a great thought that I will look into tonight. Thanks!

    Left Cam cassette

Hey folks, I have replaced all chains and guides, except balance shaft, in my SOHC 4.0. I notice that the tensioner side of the front cassette is really tight. It moves, but it takes a good hard push. I loosened the lower retaining bolt and its still really tight. (admission of stupid: I did...

Great pic. Ill take a look. Thanks again

    Cam Sprocket

Thanks Bubba. You've about done it all. It would have been the rear sprocket. I'm gonna go tow it outta there tomorrow and just suck it up and do it myself. I have not seen the rear guides, but the fronts are intact. When the car was running, I would have a little rattling for about 3 secs and...

    Cam Sprocket

I made the mistake of trusting a hack mechanic to do a head gasket job. Originally it was no problem, but now he's telling me the engine has to come out. BS. I suspect he may have dropped one of the cam sprockets into the cassette (prob rear). Is that even possible? If he has, can it be fished...

    head gasket prob??

I feel ya dude. I had a 95 that never gave me any issues at all for 170k miles. Then a new driver totalled her for me. Bought a clean looking 97 with 130k 3 months ago and its been a money pit. Doing heads now.

    head gasket prob??

I had the same behavior. Mine is a cracked head.

    Hey all

Hey, looky here! An Aussie!!!! My summer ride was built down under. It's a Pontiac G8 GT. I believe it's a Holden Commodore there. No pics of the Ex yet. They'd be nasty anyway, covered in salt and snow.

    Hey all

I'm mostly posting to get rid of the 'Howdy' message. I had a 95 XLT that was the best car I ever owned. Never asked for anything but filters, oil, and a rotor or two in 170k miles. A month ago, a young driver turned left in front of me totalling her. No one was hurt, gonna miss that car. I...
