    PTU Problems

Wow- only took Ford 10 years to make a reliable PTU if you consider the years of development before the explorer launch in 2011 and usage in similar vehicles like edge. Way to go Ford.

    PTU Problems

I used that one also and worked good on my 11. Warm fluid helps for sure. I used it to fill it also. I used about 12” of 1/4” OD copper line- the soft kind u can bend by hand. Made a French curve shape to it and I could easily feel the bottom of the case as I menuvered it thru the fill hole...

Pulled CV joint apart - Replacing ATF after removing axle?

Super Greg I did a drain and refill of tranny. The dip stick is very hard to read. Try some light sandpaper to shine it up a bit. Take several readings per procedure and call it good. I sucked a little out with 1/4” tubing connected to vacuum or large syringe. Search for ptu on this forum...

    PTU

I don’t get why ford can’t make a reliable unit after 10 years or more. Kind of ridiculous if u ask me. Maybe heat from catalytic converter is one factor. Other theory is some units generate more heat from manufacturing tolerances. Tighter gear mesh causing extra heat. Either way it’s a sad...

    PTU

Ford designed the ptu to be maint free. Why else would they not add a two dollar drain plug.

Water pump failure leads to dead engine

I am not an expert on water pumps, but I would think the bearing could fail first, then the shaft wobbles so bad it takes out the seal next. The seal could also fail first. Regardless of failure origination, the coolant has the potential to get into the oil. It has never been clear to me in...

Lower Air Dam Intake Duct Falls Off / Missing

I bet you could get a lot of things to work and I can’t speak to the above. I would put in new ford clips and be done with it personally. Ford spent the most time of anyone designing and testing them and I felt they were adequate on the dozen oil changes I did.

Lower Air Dam Intake Duct Falls Off / Missing

Towing heats up the catalytic converters more than normal while towing. The rear cat is next to the ptu and as a result will heat up the ptu in addition to the normal heat from gears inside the ptu rubbing and turning. The air duct helps take away some of this added heat while towing. I would...

Water pump failure leads to dead engine

I would guess when you open up the engine you may be faced with stretched chains and worn guides. You may be looking at $2000+. If it were me I’d drive it and keep eye on coolant tank level. Teenage driver has a high chance of wrecking car anyway.

    Recommendations on how to sell

Congrats. Did buyer care about the major repairs done recently. Did it help sell it you think? Regards

Anyone tried iridium spark plugs on the 3.5 V6 na

I used iridiums in the 3.5 NA. Ran just fine and should last much longer than the stock ones which did not even make the 100k change interval ford recommended. Did not see a difference other than solved my misfire problem.

Water pump failure leads to dead engine

My guess is op is referring to the coolant temperature on left display. You can toggle it on and off with tachometer and other options. Problem is if you have high coolant temp due to coolant leaking past water pump, you have lost a lot of coolant and it is too late. Your in final stages of...

Water pump failure leads to dead engine

It’s a bad deal all the way around and Ford sticking it to customers with failed engines does not help their case. $7000 repair with absolutely zero warning is unbelievable to me. Hopefully the failure rate is very low.

    Recommendations on how to sell

I think some may appreciate the recent big ticket items, just depends on the buyer. The person buying mine was more concerned on looks/condition and did not even ask what work was done to it.

    Recommendations on how to sell

Sold my 2011 xlt on CL for $12500 with newer tires and 100k one month ago. Drove and looked like new. I started at 13k. I honestly don’t think all the work done recently on yours will affect the sales price much. If anything as a buyer it may make people more nervous, like what’s going to go...

    2013 Transmission Flush

I did a drain/refill twice this past fall. Genuine Mercon fluid was only $5/quart delivered by Rock auto. Bought 10 quarts. I drained it warm, and got 4-4.5 quarts each time as I recall. I had a really hard time figuring out the level on the dipstick. I am pretty sure it was slightly low at...

    How to adjust ATF level

When mine was overfilled I was able to put a small dia plastic tube down the fill tube and suck it out with a cheap electric pump. A vac pump would work too. You need a 1/4” tube and helps if fluid is warm.

    Explorer reliability

I had a 2011. It was reliable overall, but not troublefree. Turn signal and washer stalk had to be replaced. Would not shut off. Airbag connector problems. Both strut bearings failed. Rear caliper seized. Having crossed 100k recently we felt time to sell it and not press our luck with a...

    Windshield wipers won't stop

I would think the motor is fine if it works in other speeds. I thought it’s just a dumb motor. Works or doesn’t. I would suspect a bad ground somewhere or possibly the controller. I had an issue a few years ago where the wipers were always on. It was stuck on some intermittent speed and...

Water pump failure leads to dead engine

I think so. I had mine right at cold mark in fall. Then a few weeks later with cold weather it was .5 inches lower. Stayed there all winter.

Water pump failure leads to dead engine

I think $2400 is the best price I have seen to date and is nearly as much as just a water pump replacement at some dealers. Nice score.

Water pump failure leads to dead engine

I just sold my 11 with 105k. It was a tough choice, as it is a nice vehicle overall, but in the end, I just don't want to deal with water pump failure as it ages and the odds increase. I don't want to be on a long drive either and hope the water pump is not leaking into the oil... If Ford had...

Noise coming from right CV half shaft maybe?

There is a special, thin, retaining ring that holds the needles and rollers from falling off. If you beat this thing back together, it is possible you damaged the thin clip and it came off and/or needles came out. I think that chance is slim, and I think the car would make weird noises driving...

Noise coming from right CV half shaft maybe?

I can't see the halfshaft causing this. The spider assy can generally slide completely out of housing, but it should slid right back in. If you turned 120 degrees to next position, the boot would be all twisted and nasty looking. Some housings use a wire ring that prevents it from coming out...

Spark Plug job on Explorer Sport 3.5L Ecoboost

I just did mine on the 3.5 N.A. and I did remove the upper intake. Even at that, it was not too bad. I took maybe 4 hours, but that was usual first time slowness and careful working for me. My point is even if you have to remove manifold, its not that bad. I put in a new PCV valve and new...
