Can't get front CV axle in.

Trying to replace a front (driver's side) CV axle on a 2002 Mountaineer AWD. Doing a bunch of other front end work, so just about everything is out except the steering knuckle w/tie rod attached (upper control arm is out). Couldn't for the life of me figure out a way to position things to get...

2002 Mountaineer won't shift out of park, no brake lights

Thanks to everyone who posted! Turned out Auto Zone sold me a bad switch. Tested it with my meter, and it wasn't closing. Got a replacement, and now I've got brake lights again!

2002 Mountaineer won't shift out of park, no brake lights

Sounds like a brake pedal switch. When I short the wires to the switch, the brake lights come on, which also makes me think it's the switch. However, this morning I replaced the brake pedal switch with a brand new one, and I've still got the same problems. Can't shift out of park (at least...

2002 4.0L V6 valve cover gasket replacement and TIPS!

How much did they bang you out for it? Mine's leaking, and it sounds like it's more of a PITA than I want to deal with to do it myself...

2004 Mountaineer timing chain tensioner part number?

I've got a 2004 Mountaineer with the 4L SOHC, and I'm getting intermittent noise from the front timing chain area. Hoping the timing chain tensioner is just getting weak and needs replaced, rather than the entire timing set. Trouble is, I can't seem to find just the timing chain tensioner to...

    Motorcraft class III hitch compatability?

I have a Motorcraft class III hitch that I bought for my 1997 Explorer. Does anyone know if it will fit on my 2000 Mountaineer? It was never installed on the Explorer.

How to: Quick and Easy 2nd gen Blend Door Replacement Tutorial

Are you testing the actuator with it installed? If there's some issue with the blend door, it might be preventing the actuator from moving if it's installed. If it isn't installed (but just has the wires plugged in), you might need to reset the EATC before the actuator will work. Start by...

How to: Quick and Easy 2nd gen Blend Door Replacement Tutorial

Not having an Expedition manual, I've got no idea. If it uses a similar setup, it's likely, but you'd have to verify it.

    How to operate belt auto-tensioner

Oops, came across the post via a search, didn't realize it was the 2002-2005 section. Managed to get it on, but I think I'm ordering that tool from Harbor Freight anyway...

    How to operate belt auto-tensioner

Any idea how to do this on a 97 with a 5.0L V8? I just seem to have pulleys, with no visible way to adjust them. Had to replace the alternator, and can't get the damned belt back on! Until then, I'm dead in the water (or driveway).

    Blend Door Actuator Not Working

I can't seem to get the EATC in my 97 Eddie into self-test mode. Is it the same combination of buttons as on the 98? When I press off and floor together, the system turns off, then when I press auto (within 2 seconds), it just goes into auto mode.

List of Useful Threads Complete 2nd Gen A/C Troubleshooting Thread

Can anyone verify that the Dorman 604-201 actuator works on a 97 with EATC? Every place I check shows it listed for 1998-2001. If I do a search for my vehicle, I get the 604-202, but that lists manual air, and I've definitely got EATC in my Eddie Bauer.

How to: Quick and Easy 2nd gen Blend Door Replacement Tutorial

Upon further review, I think I cut most of the way along that side (might have needed to to get it to "flap". It's been a while. The "flap" piece wasn't completely disconnected from the duct.

How to: Quick and Easy 2nd gen Blend Door Replacement Tutorial

In my case, only the 3 sides were cut, the fourth (as seen in the picture) remained connected and the "flap" was just bent down enough to allow removal and insertion of the blend doors. Take care cutting around the round "seat" area, which is where the bottom of the blend door shaft rests...

Camshaft Position Sensor replacement--a bit of discussion

Thanks, I sort of figured that, but I was hoping there might be an easier way that I just wasn't seeing. The coil pack support has one bolt on each side bottom, and then one on the side, or are there more that are hidden where I can't see them?

Camshaft Position Sensor replacement--a bit of discussion

Anybody have any tips on removing the Camshaft Synchronizer on a 5.0L 97 EB? I can't even get to the capscrews on the CPS, let alone remove the entire synchronizer. There's some sort of rigid hose running in front of it (part of the AC?) and the coil packs are mounted over it.

    air horns

I plan on using the relay, but rather than having a button to trigger it, I figured I could hook the relay to the original horn wiring.

    air horns

When wiring up the Wolo kits, the instructions that come with them (which are somewhat confusing) show a pushbutton horn switch wired to the relay. Couldn't you just disconnect your original horn, and use the wires for that to trigger the relay rather than installing a pushbutton? Then when you...

    blend door problem

Doesn't anybody use "search" on the forums? If you did, you'd find my easy blend door fix tutorial (somebody should make that sticky). Napa makes a kit, but you still have to remove the dash to use it (if you follow their directions). My method involves going in from the bottom of the plenum...

How to: Quick and Easy 2nd gen Blend Door Replacement Tutorial

The circular area is where the bottom of the blend door sits. I don't know if the blend door can be removed and/or installed if the cut doesn't include the circular area. It certainly would be safer to not include it, but then you might find you can't either get the old blend door out, or the...

How to: Quick and Easy 2nd gen Blend Door Replacement Tutorial

Provided the rest of your explorer's HVAC system is working correctly, it'll give you AC, Heat, or anything in between. Most of the other "repairs" involve cutting a hole and sticking the door in one position or the other, so you get one or the other. This is simply an easier way to replace the...

wiring aftermarket head unit to factory woofer

I'm not sure how much power the stock sub amp puts out, but it does a decent job powering my 10" JL Audio stealthbox. Of course, I'm not trying to shake the paint off the car with it, but one should be more than sufficient for the stock sub (two might blow it). The original stock sub in my...

2003 Sport Trac Door Glass Replacement

Woof! The rivets sound like a lot more PITA than it should be. Why couldn't they just use screws, as the window glass is quite a common replacement? I'm replacing the front passenger door, and my current one has dark tinted glass (matches the privacy glass), while the replacement door doesn't. I...

    Will a 98 door fit on a 97?

Does anyone know if you can put a door from a 98 (same model) on a 97? I've seen junkyards list the 95-97's together and the 98-00's together, so I was wondering, but not seeing them side-by-side, they look pretty much the same.

Hard To Mount 10inch sub in 8inch Location?

The stealthbox is really nice, even with the stock sub amp. I imagine it's even better with an aftermarket one. I don't know if it's $499 worth of nice, but it's definately $150 worth of nice. The only problem is if you're still using the stock audio system, you'll have to relocate the RCU in...

    Rear view camera wiring

Thanks. I've got it spliced in on the passenger side kickpanel, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be automatically switching to the camera when I put the tranny in reverse. I'm not sure if it isn't making good contact or if there's another issue. When I get the time I'll have to get in...

    JL Audio Stealthbox installation

Going with the factory sub amp for the moment (at least until it decides to fry itself). Turns out the main factory amp wasn't powering anything (at least not anything important). Unplugged everything from it, pulled it out, and I still had sound from all my speakers, along with the factory sub...

    JL Audio Stealthbox installation

Has anybody installed one of these in an explorer that came with the JBL system? I picked one up for $25 on Craigslist, and after pulling the trim panel it's apparent that in order to install the darned thing, I'm going to have to take out the factory sub amp. If you've already done this, where...

    Rear view camera wiring

I want to hook up a rear view camera in my 97 Eddie w/Kenwood DDX7017, but there's a wire that's supposed to be hooked to the reverse lamp harness (I'm assuming this would go to the +12v wire for the backup lights). Does anyone know if there's a location to tap into this in the front of the...

Gen II factory power antenna retrofit

I'm pretty sure I didn't fry anything, though early on in the testing I did think I heard the motor run briefly while I was sorting through the wires. This was before I'd disconnected anything or run a wire down from the HU's antenna trigger to the kickpanel, almost as if there was a short (or...

Gen II factory power antenna retrofit

Okay, an update. After much, much googling, I've found the following. Apparantly the two wires which go to the Explorer's power antenna come off of some sort of relay, and the antenna is grounded to the chassis. If power is applied to the red wire, the antenna should go up. If power is applied...

Gen II factory power antenna retrofit

Played around with this mess today, didn't get any progress. I can't seem to get the power antenna motor to run. I've got the same connector you do behind the kick panel (mine originally had the power antenna), there's a disconnect, but the wires (same colors) keep running to the back where all...

    Figuring out load weight

Are there any guidelines for figuring out how much a towed load weights? Specifically, I'm looking at a 20' '89 Sea Ray on a trailer. Sea Ray's website says the dry weight of the boat is 2315. How would I figure out the weight of the trailer (single axle)? I've got a '97 EB 5.0L AWD, so the...

Gen II factory power antenna retrofit

Once you get past that little cam issue that Ford swears doesn't exist, they're pretty solid. Just saw a white '97 SHO on ebay with 99K, $1000 with a day left. VERY tempting, but I've got 3 cars sitting in the driveway now, and I'm the only one in the family who drives... I'm hoping that...

Gen II factory power antenna retrofit

Hopefully 8-ball has had its cams welded or pinned, they tend to provide rather nasty surprises if they aren't. I'm waiting on a new antenna mast for mine (none of the local places had one), supposedly shipped today from Georgia (strangely enough, I just sent the CD changer from my X down to...

Gen II factory power antenna retrofit

So how did this work out? I'm trying to get my power antenna working, but think they might have butchered it when they removed the OEM HU. I figure if I can find the wires in the kick panel, I can splice them in where they need to go, and was hoping someone knew what colors they should be (97...

    taillight question

I'm not sure what the differences are, but it might be something as simple as the connectors. I'd gotten a set of visors from ebay to replace mine, looked exactly the same, but mine had a single wire connection while the replacements had a 2 wire setup. Ford seems to like changing electrical...

How to: Quick Blend Door Actuator removal for Gen II

I paid $20 on ebay, not $40, but as I mentioned, if you can get a new one for $40, you might as well grab it, as there's no guarantee how long a used one will last before the cheap nylon gears are stripped to the point where it isn't useable anymore. One note about replacing the actuators, make...
