Leaf spring swap, 99 to later

When I put used multileaves with AAL on I got zero lift, it just leveled the truck (my monoleaves were sagging). But, I'm sure that was because the multileaves were used & somewhat saggy. Not sure if AAL is supposed to raise it at all. I bet between AAL & longer shackles you could get...

    Frame off? why not?!

Nice work! I think I'm going to adjust my plans at this point, out of necessity. I'm freshening up as much stuff as I can before December, when I plan to drive it down to the folks summer home in Fla to leave in the garage for vacation use. I just replaced the valvebody, and am moving on...

    Frame off? why not?!

Definitely food for thought. I guess for the underbody, I will wait to decide how to approach it. Wish I had the time & patience to disassemble it down to the steel, because I'd strip & galvanize everything. Believe it or not, its not that bad (they typically charge by the pound IIRC)...

    Frame off? why not?!

Any effective vapor barrier that prevents oxygen & moisture from accessing the metal will stop rust (allegedly POR15 is basically a pigmented superglue). After looking high and low at all the different products available I settled on simply using POR15, its already on its way. The primary...

    Frame off? why not?!

Well, I was inspired by this thread and decided to get the Performance Accessories 792 2" lift, and the 6 pack of 4 oz. cans of semi gloss black POR15 for the frame. Hopefully the 2" kit will give me enough room to get to most of it. As far as the underbody, I'll probably just touch up the...

    Okay, thanks.

    Frame off? why not?!

Wondering how the POR15 has held up thusfar. My '98 Sport's frame is looking about that way, and I'm itching to put a stop to it as I intend to keep it forever. I've always wondered whether POR15 holds up, of whether I should do it Navy style and slather every inch of the underside with a...

Please help me brainstorm on preventative maintenance work on my '98 Sport

'98 Sport 4WD auto, has ~156K miles. Was a daily driver until the summer of 2007, at which point it was relieved. I plan to store it in Fla. so that I can fly there & not have to rent a car. I'm pretty good with most repairs myself, but that will not be as practical once the truck is...

Leaf spring swap, 99 to later

I don't think so--but I used junkyard springs & AAL. I'm thinking of going with the LMC truck $100ea. multileafs this time around though.

Leaf spring swap, 99 to later

Going from the monoleaf on a 2 door to multileaves from a 4 door actually smooths the ride out. The rear of my '98 Sport rode considerably harsher than my '91 4 door, until I finally got a set of multileaves from a 4 door & installed them on the Sport. Voila, much smoother ride, even with AAL...

Questions about turboing a 4.0 OHV

Sorry its been so long, the whole project is waiting for me to have the time & place to work. I don't have my own garage, the truck & all my tools are in storage 25 miles from my home. Hoping to have my own garage again in a year or so. When I can finally get back to it, I will take a...

Will the hatch off an '01 Sport fit a '98 Sport?

Anyone know? My '98 needs a hatch. I'm sure it will bolt up, but is any of the metalwork different? I don't care about trim.

Questions about turboing a 4.0 OHV

Here it is, sorry for the delay. Here it is on top of the Pacific Green Ex Sport it will eventually be going on. Edit: they don't show up for me, don't know why. Here is the url for the album: http://s692.photobucket.com/albums/vv282/377Z/

Questions about turboing a 4.0 OHV

I'll look into photobucket; gotta do it from home though since its blocked at work. I do need a wastegate and elbow; what would you let the wastegate go for? I actually got the turbo from a guy local to me through turbobuick.com, he suggested placing a post in the want ads for the elbow, I...

Questions about turboing a 4.0 OHV

Its a GN turbo. Very clean and the price was right, but still need to scrounge a stock exhaust elbow & wastegate. I snapped a couple pics but I can't seem to post them (don't know where to host).

Questions about turboing a 4.0 OHV

Picked up the turbo Saturday. Great condition with no endplay/runout, but missing the stock exhaust elbow. Will need to scrounge one of those, but I finally have my snail. Naturally the camera battery was dead, pics this weekend. :(

Questions about turboing a 4.0 OHV

Thanks for the reply. Based on 7 PSI & guessing a VE of 80%, I would need about 30-35 lb/min air at 5,000 RPM. I can live with the low side since I typically don't wind the crap out of it. I looked around some more and based on displacement & RPM range I think a turbo off of a GN...

Questions about turboing a 4.0 OHV

I have a ‘98 Explorer Sport with the 160HP 4.0 OHV motor & 5R55E trans, and I’d like to get the engine to produce more power. Since there doesn’t seem to be any int/exh valves on the shelf anywhere for the OHV 4.0 other than 1.71/1.36, I don’t see any meaningful way to build power without FI...

How long did your 4r55e/5r55e last?

1998 Explorer Sport, 148,x.. miles and counting. I suppose I should get around to fixing that 2-3 flare I've been experiencing for a while now....

    Spring replacement

Any additional parts needed? i.e. longer U bolts, hardware, etc. Reason I ask is that I probably won't go to a u-pull-it yard, otherwise I'd leave all that stuff hanging on the spring when I go pay. For a '98 Sport.

    my 2-3 flare woes

Thanks for the info; my understanding was that they used the 4 speed behind all OHV 4.0's (which mine has). In any case, the forward speed shifter postions are D,2,1 not D,3,2,1. In any case, I haven't done anything yet--I'm a little paranoid. Reason: Since the Ex began to act up, I...

    my 2-3 flare woes

I plan on doing exactly as you did--do the separator plate BOV kit, superior kit, and EPC while I'm in there. I'll be sure to shop Fordpartsnetwork.com. Hopefully I can get to this pretty soon & report back with my results. Thank you

    my 2-3 flare woes

My 1998 Explorer sport 4r55E with 130K street only miles has been experiencing this as well. Since the problem started a couple months ago I changed the fluid and filter hoping this would do some good & we've been babying it; easing off the gas for the 2-3 shift so it wouldn't flare and...

P/S feels like its binding; NOT bad ball joints.

Well, I was pretty worried when the pump started making more noise, but I was quite surprised when a simple fluid change quieted it down completely. I'd say a fluid change can only help.

P/S feels like its binding; NOT bad ball joints.

Well, after searching with "power steering" & "bind," "shake," "shudder," & "shimmy" & sifting thru countless posts I found a few mentions of issues occuring when the steering is turned from the wheels when the car is off becuase fluid goes where it isn't supposed to, and that going lock to lock...

P/S feels like its binding; NOT bad ball joints.

I was getting some popping noises from the front end of the ’98 Explorer. Since all the joints in the front end were OE and the car has ~112K I decided to check the ball joints/ tie rods, etc. Sure enough, the lowers were bad; I could move the wheels ~0.125†up and down. Only changed...

    Are Goodyear MT/R's noisy?

From this discussion I'm leaning toward the BFG A/T KO. I like these better than Goodyear's various A/T's. I forgot the MT/R's come stock on the Rubicon Wranglers, so I might go test one just to see what the sound is like. However, if I can't find one I think I'll just go with the BFG A/T's...

    Are Goodyear MT/R's noisy?

From what I've read here and elsewhere, the MT/R's behave pretty well on the street all things considered--I just haven't seen anything specifically addressing their noise level. I like having additional off road capability if it doesn't interfere with daily driving (thats why the '98 Ex has...

    Are Goodyear MT/R's noisy?

Got a '98 Sport and the crappy Uniroyals it came with are finally in need of replacement. I am between either the BFG T/A KO's or the Goodyear MT/R's. I've had the BFG's on my old '91 and I liked them--they balanced good, had great traction, and were not noisy. I'd like to try the Goodyears...

Changing clutch on '91 Ex, need help please!

The AA (advance adaptors) adaptor just replaces tailshaft housing with one that mates to the 1354 T/C--hooking it to the 4.0 is the difficult part as there is no bellhousing for a 4.0/T-5 as far as I know. It was just a thought (shooting ducks ;) ), I don't think its a practical swap if you...

Changing clutch on '91 Ex, need help please!

One more thought--I will never understand why Ford decided to use the M5R1 instead of the T-5. Not that I've had any problems with the M5R1, but mine does see rather light useage. Judging by the input/output shaft size the Mazda is FAR weaker. It also manages to be much larger somehow. The...

Changing clutch on '91 Ex, need help please!

Sorry guys, I somehow got unsubscribed from my own thread w/o even knowing it so I didn't know about the latest replies. I still have to take the pictures, but I will before I put it back together. I got it almost ready to go back together. The slave appears to be correct as the slave/TO...

Changing clutch on '91 Ex, need help please!

The throwout bearing definitely is not included in what I have; only the T/O 'preload' spring (I don't know what its really called). One way or the other I should find out today; Tuesday and Wednesday evenings I have class so I couldn't work on it otherwise I'd have torn it down far enough...

Changing clutch on '91 Ex, need help please!

Thank you, I may need the luck AND the force on this one. I thought I was done with the questions but something just caught my eye. I already have the slave cylinder; I decided to get it from Murray's because they use a company called Brakeware (IIRC) and the cyl. is cast aluminum leading me...

GEN II body on a GEN I frame?

The oldest GEN II is 8 years already; the GEN I rust problem was very old news by then. As early as '93, Ford added the tupperware (as standard IIRC) to mask the problem. One guy at work had a '91 new and it rusted through before the warranty expired. He had it fixed and it rusted out again 9...

Changing clutch on '91 Ex, need help please!

Excellent--we have a winner. They're prices are actually really good too--after shipping it may be a touch more expensive, but worth it for OE parts. As far as the Y-pipe goes, I'm going to look at it real good and see what the best course of action is for me. If I try to remove the pipe...

Changing clutch on '91 Ex, need help please!

One more question: I was checking out the Ford Parts Network and noticed they advertise selling original equipment parts. I have no experience with them so they could be the greatest guys to deal with or they could be terrible--I don't know. Has anyone bought parts from them...

Yea, you guys are probably right. I'm not afraid of the work, I'm afraid of what it might end up costing me to iron out all the little details. Rust is SUCH a *******.
