New starter did the trick. Quite easy to replace.

    Starter replacement

I popped the hood and checked things out. The starter is right behind the radiator cooling fans. Looks quite easy to replace. Won't even need to jack the car up. Pull it out from the top. I ran some voltage drop tests on the positive and negative starter cables and they all checked good. I...

    Starter replacement

Battery tested below specs so we had it replaced. It was less than a year old so still under warranty. We figured that would be it, but when my wife got the car back it still starts very slow.

    Starter replacement

The full story is that we were at 62k miles when the transmission failed. It sat on a hoist for a month while I tried to work with Ford. Ford kept saying work with the dealership and the dealership kept saying call Ford. I had to pay $4500 for the transmission to be replaced. Ford did offer...

    Starter replacement

I like your idea of starting with the battery. I think they do this with a typical oil change. Do you know? Just before the transmission blew we had put a new battery in so I was thinking the battery should be in good shape.

    Starter replacement

The transmission went out while driving just outside of warranty a few months ago. I had to have the transmission replaced on my dime through the dealer. Afterwards the starter has been weak and recently is barely starting the car. What I think happened was the transmission locked up not...

    Starter replacement

Hi, Anyone have any information on replacing the starter on a 2017 2.3 Ecoboost? I haven’t been able to find any information to even start such as where is the starter located. Thanks.

    Car Will Not Start

The dealer hasn't done a diagnosis on it yet, but the service writer went to move the Explorer to a different location and he said it started up hard, but when he placed it in drive it wouldn't move. BTW, I have 61k miles on the car. Isn't the warranty 60k? Chris

    Car Will Not Start

I can hear a solenoid click but it won’t turn over. I think the electrical smell coincides with when I try to crank. I couldn’t feel any hot wires from the batter, alternator or starter though.

I’ll let you guys know. I also thought about was something locked up as well.

    Car Will Not Start

We had to replace our battery after two years a few months ago. Last night my wife slowed down for some deer shortly after taking off. She said her explorer would not accelerate after she slowed. She shut down the engine and then it wouldn’t restart. When I got there I could smell a hot...

    2014 Explorer won't start- 3rd time

The dealer never found an issue. Thankfully it has never happened again. Knock on wood!

    Front Strut Bearings (2) Replaced

After 170k on my 2011 I am in need of another set of strut bearings. Looks like they only last about 80k.

    front right humming growling

Wheel bearing replacement fixed it for me.

    front right humming growling

I just got a call from the dealership on mine after taking it in for a noise and vibration in the front. They say it is a wheel bearing. At about 80 MPH it was a loud humming and slight vibration.

    2014 Explorer won't start- 3rd time

On Monday my 2011 would not start. It would just crank and never start. Towed to the dealer and after waiting a couple of days to get to it they said it started in its own. No codes and ran fine. They wanted to keep it one more night so I am waiting to hear back from them again

Bad or Burnt Exhaust smell in cabin during hard acceleration.

I have taken over daily driving our 2011 Ex with 125k miles. It still stinks every time I enter the expressway since I have to accelerate harder than normal. Our 2017 with the 4 cy Ecoboost doesn't have any smell thankfully.

    Having second thoughts

We have had the 2017 with the 2.3L a few days now and we kept our 2011 with the 3.5. I actually like driving the 2.3L better. It is a louder engine when you pull into the garage.

    2017 ordering

I was planning to order. The day I was going to tell the dealership to order I found 3 just like I wanted on dealership lots within 60 miles. I ended up going to my usual dealer and they dealer traded for one. Picking it up today.

Want to order a 2017 platinum

This is a good conversation. My normal tactic is to name a price and walk away. After going to a few dealerships you will get a feel for where they are willing to move to. You mention having more leverage when you order a vehicle. This is something I would like to learn more about. When...

Want to order a 2017 platinum

I also plan to order a 2017 Platinum and next week for me. Typically you get whatever promotions are available when you take delivery. You definitely don't have as much leverage when you order vs. take one off the lot. Chris

    Battery Life

I got almost exactly 4 years out of mine. After a few periodic slow starts, one day it would no longer start without a jump.

    Popping/grinding in steering when turning

Could it be the top bearings on the struts? I had to have ours replaced because it sounded like they were binding up and then popping. This is also a very common issue with these cars.

2017 Order Guide & Prices* (*post 53 added)

How are the high beams in 2016s? After reading about them they seem light standard halogen just like I have on my 2011. Just curious as we are thinking about a 2017.

    Will it be a 16', or a 17'?

I am waiting for the order guide. We are looking to replace our 2011 Limited with a 2017. Well, I will trade my car in and drive the 2011. It has been a great vehicle knock on wood!

    2011 - 2018 Explorer Power Steering Issue

Here is my hypothesis on the steering recall. I think the steering racks were failing while people were driving causing the power steering to go out while driving. I think for the recall they changed the software to 1) better detect a failure was about to occur setting a DTC and 2) more...

    2011 - 2018 Explorer Power Steering Issue

    2011 - 2018 Explorer Power Steering Issue

I have 110k miles so I am safe there. I wish I would have posted yesterday. I didn't know about towing and ended up muscling it about 20 miles to the dealership. I did run a health report that someone else suggested. It did capture the faults.

    2011 - 2018 Explorer Power Steering Issue

Thanks for the response. I did read the document. If I understand correctly it seems like I have extended coverage on the steering gear. I also went into myford and it says for my vehicle is covered by the extended warranty. I guess I have to hope the issue I have is related to the steering...

    2011 - 2018 Explorer Power Steering Issue

Hello All, Yesterday my wife started her 2011 Explorer and she received a Terrain Management Fault. The car was driving OK so she kept driving. She made a stop and when she restarted the vehicle it said Service Power Steering and Advanctrak fault. Now there is no power steering. I started...

    Front Strut Bearings (2) Replaced

I got the car back from the shop with the two strut mounts replaced with two new struts. I had 90k miles on the car. All the noises are gone when turning the steering wheel. I think only one side was bad, but figuring the other might go soon it was recommended to replace both.

    Front Strut Bearings (2) Replaced

My car had been making a noise in the passenger front when turning the wheel. it sounds like a coil spring make a noise. turns out the strut mounts need to be replaced. $760 for new mounts with new struts. Also the rear brakes are worn, leaky rear shocks, and they mentioned a leaky front PTU...

Popping, Clicking noise from front. Newer TSB

For those of you that had the front end noise did it sound like it was coming from the front on the passenger side? We have 90k miles on our 2011 Explorer and when we turn the steering wheel you can hear/feel noise. Almost like a coil spring releasing.

    Rear Shocks Replaced

I am glad I found this thread. I have 95k on our 2011 and the oil change at the dealer said the rear brakes needed to be replaced and had one leaking shock. I thought it was weird that the rear brakes wore first, but it sounds common along with the shock. Maybe I will plan to do the repairs...

    Towing with a 2015 Explorer

I get the same clunking noise as well. Also had it with the Ford Flex we use to have. It is very loud. Adding some weight to the trailer does help a lot. never hear it in my old 2000 F150.
