Gas modified by Acetone results
95 octane equalling to our 92 octane still means that the UK runs higher octane. However, I argue with the notion that higher octane fuel always provides more performance. Octane is a measure of the gasoline's resistance to ignition; eg if you increase the compression ratio of your motor...- ShadeTreeMech

Hello from Arkansas. Any Cummins fans here?
I believe I was replying to another link about your explorer, Dora. Cannot recall now :) Has anyone put more ponies behind their 4.0 and killed the a4LD? The 3.9 has only an extra 60 ft/lbs torque than the 4.0 when stock, and less horsepower. I'm starting to think the A4LD may handle a...- ShadeTreeMech

Hello from Arkansas. Any Cummins fans here?
try this for a test of torque. Put your front bumper against something solid (big tree close to pavement, a bick wall) put your truck in first gear (obviously you need a manual for this) and slowly let out the clutch without touching the accelerator. If you have sufficient torque, the back...- ShadeTreeMech

Hello from Arkansas. Any Cummins fans here?
My most modest estimate of fuel mileage from a 3.3 cummins in my explorer will put me around 25-30 mpg. I am looking seriously at a 3.3, but the 3.9 has been around since our fathers were young and there is a crap load of information about them, while the 3.3has been around since only '98 or...- ShadeTreeMech

Hello from Arkansas. Any Cummins fans here?
If you want to get some serious info on a Cummins repower go to www.4btswaps.com. Lots of good people and loads of information. I think I saw that explorer on there once before...it gives me hope :) There's a guy with a '85 F-250 crew cab long bed getting 28 miles per gallon from his 4BT...- ShadeTreeMech

Hello from Arkansas. Any Cummins fans here?
Ford tends to be very unhelpful with us older vehicle owners, at least online. Might have to got to a dealership to ask. I bet the detroit was from Canada; all the cool stuff always goes over the borders. I'll bet that Detroit was HEEAVVVYYYY.- ShadeTreeMech

Manually locking up the A4LD Torque convertor
I've been trying to figure out how to manually lock up the torque convertor in my '91 Explorer, and found a good link at a sister forum: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7831 The test below was pasted from the above link: Installing a Torque Converter lock up switch. Gas modified by Acetone results
This site is the best I could find on the subject http://www.pureenergysystems.com/news/2005/03/17/6900069_Acetone/ And it states that too much will raise the octane and reduce fuel mileage. There is a good graph showing 4 different vehicle and how different amounts of the acetone affected...- ShadeTreeMech

My Quest for 30 lives on .....
aldive, love the thread and look forward to reading the rest of it soon. Thought this might be interesting to people following this thread. Apparently, biodiesel does wonders in a gas engine. http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_make2.html#gas They talk about 2 stroke engines at first...- ShadeTreeMech

Hello from Arkansas. Any Cummins fans here?
cool on the five speed. Anyone played with the differential gears? Can I go to a part dealer and tell them I want the spider gears from a SportTrac and put them in, or is there more to it? Has anyone put in higher gears into their 4x4 to increase fuel ecomomy? how did it go? I wish I...- ShadeTreeMech

Hello from Arkansas. Any Cummins fans here?
Hey dopler, the chevy p-30 breadvan is the #1 place to get a 4 cyl 3.9L CUMMMINS motor. Chevy doesn't have the common decency to make us a good 4 cyl diesel on their own. I'm likely to put in the 5 speed first (before the cummins 4bt) and maybe the gears in the diff. if it sounds like an...- ShadeTreeMech

Hello from Arkansas. Any Cummins fans here?
I have a '91 XLT with a great stock body, but what I would consider as a weak drivetrain. At 4btswaps.com I've been exploring (pun intended) the possibility of putting a I-4 cummins into my truck without changing the whole driveline. Other than swapping out the A4LD for a 5 speed, and the...- ShadeTreeMech
