Head freeze plug leaking '95 2/26

I jumped off the bridge and pulled the heads over the weekend. The water jacket area was moderately filled with sludge. I'm having them cleaned and putting new brass freeze plugs in. The valves passed vacuum check and were still flat!! But..... according to the guy at the machine shop, the...

Head freeze plug leaking '95 2/26

Good link Billy, thanks. I think I'll go for the optimal rust protection and run 100% coolant. According to cartalk, research showed that 50/50 will still offer good protection. But.... the less water the better for corrosion, so I'll likely go 70/30. It doesn't get that cold here in CA, but...

Head freeze plug leaking '95 2/26

Hey Big Jim Yeah, I'm currently thinking I ought to just bite the bullet and pull the head. Then I can do a good visual inpection for corrosion and just replace all the plugs. And, while I'm doing one, I ought to do both.... I think my weekend just filled up. Any other considerations about...

Head freeze plug leaking '95 2/26

Block heater? I'll have to check those out. No need for them here in CA, but if it makes for an easier installation... Cutter: The plug is sealing the coolant which is at least 16 psi and hot. Not sure what gas tank repair is, but its worth checking out. thanks

Head freeze plug leaking '95 2/26

thanks EB and Texan. Using a mirror I was able clean and inspect the plug. One small pinhole leak right in the center. I tried JB weld. Drained the coolant, carefully cleaned and roughened with sandpaper, cleaned again, applied a thin layer and let it cure for 14 hrs. After running on...

Head freeze plug leaking '95 2/26

yeah, I was just trying to avoid pulling the head which I think would be ~10 hrs.... Not enough room between the head and firewall to pound the new one in...

Head freeze plug leaking '95 2/26

Did some research and, short of taking off the head, cleaning up the plug and using JB weld might be worth trying. Anybody tried this??

Head freeze plug leaking '95 2/26

The rear freeze plug on the driver side head has visible corrosion and is leaking. Checked the radiator and it was 1/2 full. This is the wife & kids truck, I don't want them stranded. Need your repair advice. Does the head need to be removed for repair? Or, has anyone used any type...

    Thunking in 2WD

Bump! I've pulled the front driveshaft out and have ignored the problem for too long. Anyone know a good source for transfer cases? Any opinion on rebuilding vs replacing? Anyone have a manual for rebuilding?

    Thunking in 2WD

Tom, Thanks for the comments. I'll do some more searching. Although I did pull the connector off the transfer case, it may still be engaging mechanically like you said, or maybe (a longshot) electrically since there are hardwired electrical connections that bypass the connector. I'm...

    Need transfer case help!!

My 95 appears to engage the front driveline intermittently when in 2wd. I hear a thunking sound and front drive shaft speeds up. I pulled apart the front axle lock (not a hub) and this operated fine (vacume piston slides a collar to lock the wheel halfshaft to the front diff output shaft)...

    engine stall @ idle

I had the exact same problem with my 95. I replaced the IAC and problem solved. I did try to clean it first, but that didn't help. I forget what the part cost, but is was fairly cheap.

Lets analyze this (control trac transfer case) LONG

I've got a 95 and have problems with the 4wd system engaging in 2 wd. As part of my diagnosis, I ripped into the front drive shaft between the front diff and the right front wheel. There is a vacume operated shift collar that engages the front wheels to the front driveshaft. The front...

    Thunking in 2WD

Just talking to myself now... I pulled the auto hub (Ford calls it the Motor and Cover assembly). A vacuum driven piston moves a collar to connect the output from the front diff to the rt side half axle. It works fine. When I pumped the fluid from the front diff I did notice flakes and...

    Thunking in 2WD

Need more help! Ok, I've checked prior posts and most refer to vehicles with auto hubs on each front wheel. I think my 95 only has one "auto hub" between the front diff and the right front wheel. Is it common for this hub to not fully disengage? Can I just replace it or remove it? I've...

Thanks for the clues and warning Robb, I'll check it out.

    Thunking in 2WD

I've searched prior posts but have not discovered any similar problems, so I'm asking for help.. My X is a '95 4WD XLT with limited slip in the rear. In 2wd, under slow acceleration, it makes a thunking sound up to about 20-30 mph. It also feels like the truck slows down slightly. When I...

    Intermittant no start

BeginnerXplorer, Sounds encouraging! Might be the best $9 I've spent. What were the clues that led you to replacing the relay? Greg

    Intermittant no start

Ira, Could a check valve failure be intermittent? If so, and the fuel lines were drained of fuel, how long should it take the lines to be filled? Where is the check valve located? What is involved in replacing the check valve? Greg

    Intermittant no start

My truck is a 95 4WD 4.0 SOHC with factory power electronics (seat, windows, doorlocks), theft, and towing packages. Over the past several weeks, my '95 fails to start intermittently. The starter will spin the engine but the engine fails to catch. After a period of time, about 30 minutes, the...
