97/98 SOHC V6 timing chain tensioner PROBLEMS!
What is with these problems coming at such low miles? My friend had a 99 lightning that had similar problems. He got the motor replaced at 500 miles!! but the noise problems remained. He took it back several more times to no avail, and Ford took it back under the lemon law.- sprsvt

5x7 / 6x8 comps
You might want to listen to cerwin vega stealths, as well. I have those 6x8's in mine. My dad has Boston Pro 5" component speakers in his, but the Vega's stay much clearer when turned up. My dad has an Alpine V12, and I have a pioneer 240.4, so we both run about 60w rms. I don't know if the...- sprsvt

Cat. Converter Removal or Gutting
I was looking at the cats on my 98 sohc, and it looked liked there were either 4 or 6 cats, i can't remember. If I were to get high flow cats, would i need 6, or could i cut out the existing ones and replace them with 2? Also, what would the performance gains be, 1-2 hp, or possibly more?- sprsvt

Flowmaster vs Dynomax vs borla???
Ryan- Just because the numbers are coming from the manufacturers doesn't mean they are accurate. Look at the '99 cobras; they are supposed to be Ford's best (they even have the engine builders sign the damn thing) but people have dynoed them and seen them come up 50hp short of claimed. It's...- sprsvt

What is this?
I have had a similar experience upon startup, but maybe for less than a second. I know that when i am low on gas the "CHECK GAUGE" light comes on, so I am dumbfounded as to what the gas can light is.- sprsvt

Which motor do I have?
I think Lobo Louie wants to know what the original engine was, not the current one. I would imagine it to be the OHV (or EFI, but they are both EFI). It wouldn't make since to change out ALL of the engine and related components to go to a less powerful engine.- sprsvt

Base Ford System
From what I have heard, you cannot use an aftermarket double DIN in the explorer. The stock Ford unit clips in, while an aftermarket needs to be bolted in. With nothing to bolt it to, it would just rattle around in your dash. Does anyone know if there is some type of bracket that would enable...- sprsvt

Looking for tubular running boards for 4 door
The XLS came out in '99, so you shouldn't have any problem getting them from ford. I don't think that they would be extremely expensive, though.- sprsvt

24lb or 30lb injectors??
Usually larger injectors are only used to provide additional fuel to an increased amount of air intake, i.e. a supercharger. If you have an intake, MAF sensor, throttle body, headers, and a catback, you could probably get a larger fuelpump and injectors, and get a custom chip to utilize the...- sprsvt

Maximun tire width
The Steeda has 17x9 Cobra R's, but I don't know if they push it to the limit. You might be able to use wider rims.- sprsvt

99 Lightning Rims
The Cobra R's (17 inch) do fit (with an adapter kit?) Check out the steeda explorer. This does make you think that any mustang rim would work on an explorer though, doesnt' it (18's perhaps)- sprsvt

99 Lightning Rims
No, they won't. The f-150's and lightnings have hubcentric wheels. That just means that any wheels on them have to be specially made.Originally, they thought you would never be able to find aftermarket rims because of this. In Motortrend I think, they found that the spare tires weren't...- sprsvt

98 head unit
Thanks, Intns9, I just put in some Vega Stealth 6x8's and a pioneer 200w.4 amp to power them. I also have 2 pioneer 12's (that sound like ****) powered by a 360.2 pioneer. It gives me a headache, so I am happy now. I think I want to get a new box though, I have a bandpass that rattles like...- sprsvt

Should I change?
Hey Jordan714, I have 2 12" Pioneer 400w subs in an R/T bandpass. I just got a new Pioneer amp that is 360.2. I'm sure there are subs that could be better matched to this amp and box bandpass box. Do you have any suggestions?- sprsvt

What first a TB or MAF?
Extreme4x4, I am in the same situation concerning the MAF and the TB; I was wondering if you know this to be true of the SOHC, I didn't see what engine you were talking about. I've heard that the catback doesn't give too much improvement, and that headers are the way to go. what other...- sprsvt

larger air flow sensor?
Jordan714 informed me that Performance Products carries an MAF sensor for a SOHC 4.0 made by Granatelli (?) Motorsports. Performance Products says it is good for about 10hp. I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that Performance Products is pretty reputable (unless you can tell me...- sprsvt

Custom headers
There is a company called JBA Headers that makes headers for the SOHC Explorers. I don't think this application is posted on their site but the site is www.jbaracing.com I spoke through email with Jim Escobar at JBA, and he said that they have headers for this application. They are US$539.15...- sprsvt

Steeda Suspension
I used to live in Canoga Park CA which isn't too far from Irvine, so I am pretty familiar with what they have to offer. It seems to me like the handling mods on the saleens are basically different shocks and 18 inch magnesium rims. I don't feel like spending 3 grand on the rims, which I...- sprsvt

Steeda Suspension
I know this might be a sin and please don't kick me off for even contemplating this, but the Explorer seems like a good candidate for increased on road handling abilities. TOP END DOOR SPEAKERS
I listened to some Pioneer 6x8 3 ways and the Cerwin-Vega 6x8 and there was no comparison. I had actually gone to buy the Pioneers, and listened to the Vegas as an afterthought. Compared to the Vega's, it sounded like all the treble was taken out of the Pioneers, although I know that wasn't...- sprsvt

98 head unit
I have the premium sound package, and have many items on my to do list. I wanted to get a new head unit, but people are saying that the 6-disc changer in the console is incompatible with many head units. Who makes the changer? I would rather get a 40.4 head unit than buy an amp to power mids...- sprsvt
