AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

Need some more help, if you guys don't mind. I bought a manifold gauge set from Harbor. With the system off, I'm reading 82 on both sides. With the system running, I reading about 38 on the low and 225 on the high, outside temp is about 90-95. Can't seem to get air colder then 66. Still cutting...

    Fixed my blend door, free!!!

Ok, I need a little help making this work. Right now, my actuator works, and I bought a back up. The "V" on the door that the pin sets into is pointing at 10 o'clock. It won't move, but the actuator will. I've set it to heat and removed the actuator, and the pin is in the right position, but the...

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

Thanks for heads up. I decided to check my blend door actuator. Its not working. I'm buying a new one from Ford tomorrow morning. Hope this is the end of my ac repairs for awhile. Vacumn Question

Thanks for the reply. Ends up my blend door actuator is not working. Need to replace it. The gods of backyard mechanics are shining, because I could be replacing the blend door itself, which runs about $600 in parts alone.

    Vacumn Question

Did you ever figure out this problem. I'm losing AC on moderate acceleration. As soon as I hit 2100 RPM, or there about, I get warm air. I can hear the clutch clicking off, then clicking back on when I hit 4th and drop to 1500 RPM.

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

OK. I'm going to buy a high side gauge and check this out. I'll post the readings tomorrow. I've noticed that as soon as the car hits 4th gear on acceleration and drops to 1500 RPM, the air gets cold again. Never a problem in idle or park.

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

This AC is driving me nuts. I've replaced the compressor with a new one, replaced the accumulator, replaced the orifice tube. Had a vacuum pulled, dye added, and refilled. Now the thing doesn't want to work when the engine is over 2100 RPM. With the engine warm and in neutral, I can run it to...

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

I took it in last night, had the system evacuated, vacuumed, and filled. Also had them add dye, just in case. Turns out there was a fair amount of air in the system. The mechanic that evacuated the system said everything looked up to snuff on the install work. Air is working well, and I hope it...

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

Precision Auto/Tune is performing an evac, vacuum, and refill today for $70. The mechanic that wanted $1100 to fix my non-existant Black Death wanted $103. Thanks again for all of those who assisted me with posts on this situation. I hope I can return the favor. I've learned alot about AC's.

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

Thank you for the info on the vacuum. I don't want to drop another $300 on a compressor. The truck will visit a local AC guy this week. At least now I have ice cold air after cleaning the damn in cabin sensor. Its always the little things that get you.

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

Glacier991, Well, I don't think I need to visit a shop. I found a post were someone had problems with the automatic controls on his 97, 98, or 99. Anyways, someone told him to look at the in-cabin sensor, on the passenger side mini-vent. Well, while I was waiting for you to explain the need...

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

That could explain things. What does pulling a vacuum do to the system that can make such a big difference? As far as having a shop do this, I agree.

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

I didn't run the vacuum. I just flushed the condensor, nothing bad looking came out. Reading 44psi on the low side with the system running, compressor running with outside temp in mid to high 80's. Both accumulator tubes are cold, one's a little colder. Noticed they weren't sweating with old...

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

Not want I expected This weekend I replaced the compressor, accumulator, and orifice tube. Took me about 2.5 hours. There was no black gunk on the orifice tube, which means the compressor was not totally gone. Just the normal metal shavings on the screen, and not a whole lot. Now, I still...

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

jgilbs, you shouldn't worry about asking questions on my posts. I am learning from your questions as well. Glacier991, I was wondering if there is a good way to break this job into two days. I would like to knock out a few things by myself on friday before I use a friend of a friend's garage...

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

AC Black Death on 98 5.0 Please Help!!!

Glacier991, I have been reading alot of posted about AC involving you. Couple of questions. How many hours should I expect to invest in this repair? What recommendations do you have? My experience on AC is limited. Had a clogged evaporator on 90 Integra, just blew it out on a bench and...

AC Not Exactly Cold, OK Pressure & Clutch

My AC recently stopped blowing cold air. Two weeks ago everything was fine, blowing very cold air. With 85-90 weather in Charlotte, NC this is not exactly ideal. The freon pressure is good, about 45 PSI. I checked the blend door, and it is operating fine. The clutch seems to be working fine as...

    Manifold Gasket Help

James, I tried to do this without success. How/where did you attach the strap? I could only get a gap of like 5mm. How long did this job take you? I'm tempted to take this POS into the shop and have them replace both sides. I live in an apartment and may just bite the bullet and pay, or try...

    Horrible clunk, maybe U-Joint?

Yes, they do have hub assemblies. As far as I understand things, on AWD, the bearings are part of the hub assembly and replacing bad bearing entails replacement of the entire hub assemblies. Unfortunately for those of us with AWD, this also means a $400 repair instead of a $30 repair. You can...

    Horrible clunk, maybe U-Joint?

Yup, it AWD. This is my first AWD vehicle. Thanks to the front right and left hub assemblies going bad and the t-case chain stretching, the AWD cost me $1600. Fun part was having both problems within one month of each other. Now my catalytic converter is on the way out, my passenger side exhaust...

How Much for '98 AWD Tranny Rebuild?

UPDATE Everyone, Sorry for taking so long to update. I had two shops quote me on a t-case rebuild. The off-road shop here in Charlotte quoted me $1400. The highly respected tranny shop(yes, I understand that respect and tranny shop do not belong in the same sentence) here in Charlotte quoted...

How Much for '98 AWD Tranny Rebuild?

I posted a thread looking for help on a U-Joint. Turns out its not the U-Joint, but rather the transmission chain. I was informed that these chains were faulty and have a reputation for stretching. My brother works for Ford and once admitted they suck at building transmissions. Now I wish he was...

    U Joint Help!!!

Thanks for the input. The old lady is around today, so I'll be digging in soon. Besides a replacement part and penetrating oil, is there anything else I need to buy? Horrible clunk, maybe U-Joint?

The horrible clunk only happens on acceleration. For instance, when you're a second behind accelerating when the light changes, and you go a little harder on the gas. No noise when stopping. It only produces the clunk, which can be felt in your feet, butt, and throughout the truck, when I hit...

    Horrible clunk, maybe U-Joint?

I just had both hub assemblies replace on '98 5.0 AWD. Just the other day, the truck made a horrendous clunk underneath upon 50% gas from a stop. I can force the truck to make the noise, but it sends chills up my spine. The previous owner is a relative, and he had to replace the universal joint...
