Were the newer Rangers wired differently or did they use different pins for the speakers? Or could this have something to do with the rear audio controls on the Explorer console since the Rangers didn't have them?

Wow 2000StreetRod that's perfect. We did jump two cables but I honestly forgot which ones. The wires we connected did allow the starter to crank, but unfortunately the rpm will only go up to 4700 (that's all that the sct programmer allows in neutral for whatever reason).

These guys did an amazing job with the shifter. It's the same transmission as mine but they obviously raised the shifter and brought it much closer to the dash. ps... I've chirped 3rd occasionally myself :D

I've pretty much given up on the oem look, I'm thinking along the lines of using the Ranger tray and cup holder setup just to cover where the center console used to meet the center stack. Hopefully someday I'll get a custom shifter that sits further forward, and I'll just slap a nice boot on it...
