    94 4x4 Limited Edition

Could Ford have put a 2nd gen steering wheel in his 94? Mine was built in October 94 and I have a few 2nd gen parts (console, spot for power lock switch near rear hatch) but no airbag.

    Options for CD?

I had to grind the corners on my trim piece on my 91 Ranger to get a DIN radio to fit. I used a small file and it was a piece of cake. Early 1st gen Exploreres might be similar.

    Options for CD?

I think Crutchfield might be referring, in this case, to the amplifier bypass kit. Any DIN head unit should slide right in but a high powered unit will mess with the factory amp.

    power steering whine

If you end up swapping the pump out, get the ford tool for removing the pully. I didn't but wish I had. Ended up having it swapped out when I sent my 91 in to the dealer for an electrical gremlin.

    Difference between 91-94

I heard somewhere that there is a different camshaft for the manual and automatic transmissions in the early years. Supposedly the manual is tuned more for torque. I think my Ranger came with 145 hp but I will have to check the window sticker.

crazy new ideal for a first gen explorer(well maybe)

There was somebody on this website about a year ago who was in the Denver area that was looking to import diesels from South America for use in Explorers. I think he had located all the adpaters. Try to search for it.

    90 XLT Upgrade : Recaro-Frontseats

Those seats came out awsome. I wish I had them in my 94. They look a bit like the sport buckets in my 91 STX. I thought explorers started in 91. Did they offer '90 models in Europe? What is your build date? Is that console original? It looks like a 93/94 console.

AC Not cooling like it should

Sounds like you are not getting enough airflow through the radiator (and condenser coil) when in traffic. Your fan clutch is probably shot (like mine, but I'm too lazy to replace it). When my STX was new, the fan made a lot of noise (much airflow) at low speeds. Is your temp. gage climbing in...

    Few simple questions.

I bet the temp gage issue os a bad thermostat. I left one on my STX run cold for a while and it killed the O2 sensor. A new thermostat is <$10 and 1-2 hours of work.

    center console armrest removal?

It been a couple of years but, there is an oval-shaped plastic piece on both sides of the console, in the top rear. Most of the time, the seat backs are in the way so you cant see them. Carefully pry them off and there should be two nuts or bolts on each side. I think they are 10 mm. Remove...

trying to fix corroded battery wire...

On my 94, there were two places where it was clamped to the engine. One of them I was able to expand but the other I just tie-wrapped the new wire to. I was going to try and pull a new wire through the old loom but could no do it. The best thing about the OEM cable is the connectors at the...

trying to fix corroded battery wire...

I think that your idea might work but I doubt that the wire would be long enough to reach the battery terminal when you cut it back to clean copper. I replaced mine with the factory one for about $50 from Ford. I rigged the terminal on my 91 STX (solderless connector) but it needs to be...

what milage should I get on 94 4L std ?

My 94 XLT 5sp gets 20-22 mpg in town (Tucson) or about 360-380 miles per tank. When my thermostat started to fail last spring, the mileage went to around 18. My 91 STX 4.0 used to run cold in NJ all the time and I thought that was good. It turned out that the thermostat was stuck open and I...

    R134 wont go in

You need to jump the pressure switch. Unplug the connector and stick a paper clip in it. Then run your defrost and it should take the 134. BTW is your 94 a late model (like mine, Oct 94) or did all 94's have 134?

    Looking at a 93 XLT 5-speed - help!

I have a 94 5sdp XLT with 130k and have had no interior trim problems. The only electrical problem I have had is the positive cable from the battery to the starter. Well worth the $ for the Ford replacement part. I bet the clutch is about gone (mine lasted to 110k) so swap that out when you...

Sudden Lousy Fuel Mileage Problems Summary ?

I normally get 19.5 mpg on my 94 w/128k. When my thermostat started failing last month, my mileage dropped to the 17s. It failed in the closed position after about two tanks at the lower mpg. I am now back up to the 19s.

95 amp vs. 130amp idle speed output

Have you guys checked your wires at the starter relay? I had some corrosion on the connector that gave me the same symptoms on my 91 STX. Try running another 10 ga. cable from the positive battery terminal to the post on the starter relay. If the current can't get from the starter relay to...

    Wheel Bearing Repack

Does anyone have an idea of how to measure 16 in-lbs, or what it feels like? Is it hand tight?

    Wheel Bearing Repack

Yesterday, I reinstalled my front rotors after having them turned and repacking the bearings. I did the driver side first and then started on the passenger side. While finishing the passenger side, I realized that the torque setting on the inner spindle nut was supposed to be 16 in-lbs instead...

    93, won't start but jumpstarts

How is your positive battery cable/terminal? I had the same problem and it turned out to be corrosion deep inside the cable between the starter and the battery.

where can I get battery cables ?

I just bought the OEM positive cable form Ford for about 50 bucks. I think it is worth the money because it comes with the connector at the starter relay. This location is the second spot that corrosion occurs (after the battery post). The power distribution block gets its current through...

    Won't Start - Need ASAP Help!!! 9/24

I replaced my positive cable a couple weeks ago. Don't bother with the aftermarket crap; spend the money on the Ford part. The ford part comes with a new connector at the starer relay. I had a failure in this location on my 91 STX. I was going to try to run the new wire through the old...

    Front End Clicking Problem

My 91 Ranger had clicking noises 2 times. U-joints at 90k and front wheel bearings at 130k (which I originally thought were ujoints again). A repack of the bearings fixed the problem.

    Question on brake pads??

I had the same problem with my 94. Even though I had some life left on the pads, I decided to change them. When I took the old ones off, a shim which was located between the piston and the inboard pad dropped out. The shim was vibrating under breaking. If this is your problem, I think there...

MANual transfer case in a 97 explorer.

My 94 XLT has a manual TC and my brother-in-law's 91 XLT had one too. I also have a 91 STX with a manual TC. Was a manual TC not an option on the 2nd generation? I used a Dremel tool to remove the "fake vent" where the switches would reside on my 91 STX and mounted 3 pushbutton switches in...

    Gas smell

I have a 94 XLT with 117k. When the gas tank is below about 1/4, I have a relatively strong smell of gas from the engine compartment. Is there some kind of vapor recovery filter in the engine comparment that may be spent? Could it be a leaky fuel pressure regulator? I never had this problem...
