Dreaded Timing chain tensioner
Timing chain is an interference motor in the 98 sohc, ask my engine, chain snapped after tensioner let go(120,000 miles). bent all the open valves badly, plastic chards all in my motor to, had an engine guy drop a 2002 sohc motor with 50,000 miles on it. Runs like a charm now.- ricjin

timing chain?
I had a clanking noise from timing chain for about a month, turned out the tensioner let go , leaving my chain flopping and noisy (98xlt, sohc 120,000miles). Well chain snapped last week 75 miles from home. Tell your friend he is wrong, caused all my open valves to stay open and bent by pistons...- ricjin
