Transfer case problem
From the tag it is definitely the 4405. They are easy to remove and not too bad to rebuild yourself. I have never found a true rebuild manual for them only parts diagrams. I will see what I have and e-mail it to you. Give me a couple of days to do that. Just out of curiousity, were you...- zems

Transfer case problem
Are you sure it has a borg warner 1354? A 1998 Explorer should have a borg warner 4405, unless someone has switched it over to a 1354. The white plastic pieces are probably the wear pads on the shifting fork(s). This has probably created enough clearance that the high/low shifting collar is...- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
ScottT80, Sorry I haven't had time to post a reply. Really all the motor on the transfer case does is select the high/low range on the 4505 transfer case. The 4 wheel drive is controlled by an electric clutch in the transfer case, like a big air conditioner clutch. You can take the motor off...- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
Hi ScottT80 Was yours making the noises that I described? Did your transfer case just go into 4wd low on its own or were you switching it to 4wd low and it would not disengage? The transfer case motors are known to not be reliable after that many miles. If you did not switch it to low then...- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
Your right Thanks for the reply. I didn't make it clear that that is what I figured out also. I rebuilt the transfer case and the problem went away. I cheated and did a little work to the cases and replaced a few parts to save some money. I spent about $250.00. So far at 25,000 miles it is...- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
Thanks Chris for heads up on the tool. I was just getting ready to order one. Can you tell me where you can order this tool at. I agree that the transfer case has been making the noise. Can anyone tell me if a newer transfer case will bolt in and wire up without code problems. Also are the...- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
I have my 5r55e apart and did not need special tools to get it apart but it looks like I will need special tools to replace the overdrive sprag and align the front pump. There was nothing obviously wrong with the transmission. There was a lot of metal shavings. I will be replacing the...- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
It is definately a 5r55e transmission. Well I guess I'm only out the cost of a manual. I will have to get the new manual on its way for the 5r55e. Has anyone else rebuilt their own 5r55e Transmission. Zems- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
I guess I never felt it shift more than 3 times so I just assumed it was a 4 speed automatic. The codes on the door show that it is a 1997 manufactured in 8/96 and that it should have a 5 speed. Tommorrow I will be calling Ford with the part number on the transmission just to double check. It...- zems

Rear Wheel Bearing Question
I had a 1997 Ranger with the same problem. I only had to replace the bearings, the axle was not damaged. Check the vent on the differential. These will become restricted or plugged, then the pressure created from the heat will push the gear oil out the seals on the axle. Zems- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
The fluid level was fine and the condition was good. It was do for a filter/fluid change, not sure of maintenance history on this transmission so assume the worst. The Torque Converter was my first thought but I was told that it would act up more on acceleration then deceleration. There was...- zems

Transmission problems 1997 4r55e
I have gotten some good advice from searching these forums but I haven't found a situation similiar to mine. I have a 1997 Explorer 4x4, 4.0 SOHC with the 4r55e transmission,145000 miles. The transmission has started to grind when you let off of the gas going 35mph or faster. I have noticed...- zems
