This is just a thought but, my alt has almost always had that sound. In my case it is for sure the alt, A friend of mine recently bought a brand new "rebuilt" alt for his chevy z24 and it whines pretty loud right out of the box. Mine actually overrides the cool mellow 5.0 sound at idle but...
