Your owners manual covers this. The short answer is No, you don't have to use premium.

Buy what you can afford. The headlights IN the 11-15's are just fine, good in my opinion! If you like the look of the 16, and the new electronics then go for it. Otherwise, the 11-15's are great trucks.

I've driven all three, I'm glad you like it. I don't. As well, at 30k cheaper, the explorer is competitive and to be honest shouldn't be at that price difference. The Escalade is pretty nice, but not my style.
